Charandas is a 1977 Bollywood film directed by B.S. Thapa, starring Om Prakash, Urmila Bhatt, Lakshmi (actress), Vikram Makandar, Farida Jalal, Raj Mehra, in lead roles.

Synopsis

The entire plot is woven around Indian family values, entrepreneurship and meteoric rise in business of a workshop owning mechanic, Charandas, played by veteran actor Om Prakash. Charandas lives with his dutiful, religious wife Kamla, enacted by Urmila Bhatt, and two children, running a mechanic workshop. He has a good family friend Aslam played by Raj Mehra. His bank loan is sanctioned and in a time span of 10 years, he builds an engineering empire, becoming a rich tycoon. All through he shares family get togethers with his friends and their families and it is here, that Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, make a special appearance in a famous Qawwali, "Han Dekh Lo Ishq Ka Martava", sung by Aziz Nazan Qawwal, Yesudas, on Aslam's birthday.

Mookkaiyan (Sivaji Ganesan) belongs to a well-to-do family and lives in the village Sozhavandan. He is held in high esteem by the villagers for his prowess. One day, his uncle Chockalingam (V. K. Ramaswamy), his wife Bama (Sukumari) and their foreign-educated daughter Kalpana (Jayalalithaa) come to Sozhavandan to participate in the Mariamman festival. Kalpana is fascinated by Mookaiyan's prowess; her mother disapproves of Kalpana's emotional reaction while her father is happy. Bama settles a young man of Madurai to marry Kalpana. Moved by the pleas of Chockalingam, Mookaiyan goes to the bridegroom's house and brings back Kalpana, saying that he has the right by birth to marry her.

In the era of Guru Ram Das, one cannot leave out Rajni, youngest daughter of Rai Duni Chand, revenue collector (kardar) of Patti. (The story has all the myth, magic and miracles of a genuine Sakhi, but is nevertheless a charming story). Rajni was a Sikh, a disciple of the Guru. After accidentally meeting, Mridula (Nagma) and Arun (Prabhu Deva) fall in love. The young couple both come from affluent families, and so, to test whether they will be suited for a long term relationship, they both decide to live together. However, a few months into their relationship, Arun and Mridula get in an accident and he passes away. A devastated Mridula is unable to get over her loss, and before long starts seeing Arun in strange visions everywhere she goes. Her family eventually decide that relocating to another country might help Mridula move on, and so they send her to the UK. Once she arrives there, she meets Mano, a young man attracted to her. She knows that her parents expect her to fall for Mano. But as she can't move on, she runs away. She meets a person who looks exactly like Arun. She follows him and finds out where he lives and works. Whenever she tries to talk to him, he denies his relationship with her and says he doesn't know her. However, she later finds out that her father had Arun sent away as he had helped with Arun's sister's marriage and had threatened to let it all go downhill for her. Arun moves to UK in hopes that he can forget about Mridula but he can't and when he meets her, he realises this. When Mridula's father finds out Arun is still alive, he tries to kill him. However he realises his mistake and lets the lovebirds reunite.

Suriya, the main character, killed the villains who murdered his family and has been sent to jail. During his time in jail, a well-respected collector celebrates his daughter's birthday in prison. The collector's daughter is impressed by Surya's talent in singing and convinces her father to grant her special permission to learn music from him. During this time, they fall in love with each other and opposition grows from both the girl's parents and the police department they elope. They come to a remote town where they witness the murder of a collector in the railway station during broad daylight, but no one seems to care. They then see that the man who murdered the collector is the chief of the village, so they try to oppose him. In their time at the village, they learn about his past and change their mind about him. He promises them to get them married. The movie then moves towards the climax as whether the village chief will be successful in getting those two lovers married or the girl's father will be successful in separating them using the legal system against them.
