Synopsis
The entire plot is woven around Indian family values, entrepreneurship and meteoric rise in business of a workshop owning mechanic, Charandas, played by veteran actor Om Prakash. Charandas lives with his dutiful, religious wife Kamla, enacted by Urmila Bhatt, and two children, running a mechanic workshop. He has a good family friend Aslam played by Raj Mehra. His bank loan is sanctioned and in a time span of 10 years, he builds an engineering empire, becoming a rich tycoon. All through he shares family get togethers with his friends and their families and it is here, that Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan, make a special appearance in a famous Qawwali, "Han Dekh Lo Ishq Ka Martava", sung by Aziz Nazan Qawwal, Yesudas, on Aslam's birthday.Actors

Vijay (Rajinikanth) is a professional photographer who falls in love with a rich girl,Priya(Sridevi). They marry against her parents' wishes. The film is a story of romance that centers around two lovers: Devaa (Vijay) and Bharadhi (Swathi). The two are deep in love but encounter opposition from Bharadhi's father (Sivakumar), the head of the village. Sivakumar believes that his daughter's suitor is not a suitable one, due to his perceived reputation throughout the village. Although the son of the well to do Manorama, it comes to light that Sivakumar's disapproval stems from his relationship with his brother, who is seemingly apathetic and lackadaisical. After accidentally meeting, Mridula (Nagma) and Arun (Prabhu Deva) fall in love. The young couple both come from affluent families, and so, to test whether they will be suited for a long term relationship, they both decide to live together. However, a few months into their relationship, Arun and Mridula get in an accident and he passes away. A devastated Mridula is unable to get over her loss, and before long starts seeing Arun in strange visions everywhere she goes. Her family eventually decide that relocating to another country might help Mridula move on, and so they send her to the UK. Once she arrives there, she meets Mano, a young man attracted to her. She knows that her parents expect her to fall for Mano. But as she can't move on, she runs away. She meets a person who looks exactly like Arun. She follows him and finds out where he lives and works. Whenever she tries to talk to him, he denies his relationship with her and says he doesn't know her. However, she later finds out that her father had Arun sent away as he had helped with Arun's sister's marriage and had threatened to let it all go downhill for her. Arun moves to UK in hopes that he can forget about Mridula but he can't and when he meets her, he realises this. When Mridula's father finds out Arun is still alive, he tries to kill him. However he realises his mistake and lets the lovebirds reunite.

Professor Parimal Tripathi (Dharmendra) is a botany professor who falls in love with Sulekha Chaturvedi (Sharmila Tagore) during a women's college botany excursion. Prof. Parimal Tripathi helps the bungalow watchman to get to his village downhill to enable him to see his grandson who's fallen ill. Meanwhile he disguises himself as the bungalow watchman to protect the old man's job. Sulekha finds out one day about the cover-up and is charmed on seeing Parimal's real personality. They both get married. Parimal loves playing pranks and is the antithesis of regular professors. Sulekha, on the other hand is in awe of her jijaji (brother-in-law) Raghavendra (Om Prakash). She considers her jijaji to be highly intellectual and looks upon him as her idol. Parimal develops an inferiority complex thanks to Sulekha's excessive praise of her jijaji and decides to prove that he is in no way a lesser mortal. Jijaji, meanwhile, has written a letter to Haripad bhaiyya (David Abraham Cheulkar) asking him to send a driver who can speak good Hindi because his present driver James D'costa (Keshto Mukherjee) uses improper grammar. This provides the perfect opportunity for Parimal to get to see and interact with jijaji. Parimal becomes Pyaremohan Ilahabadi, a motor-mouth driver who pretends to hate the English language and so speaks only Hindi. So begins the comedy of errors, as Parimal and Sulekha play prank after prank on the unsuspecting jijaji.
