Synopsis

Plusieurs disciples de Charles Manson viennent de commettre un assassinat. Un an plus tard, trois filles de la « famille Manson » purgent leur peine de prison, détenues en isolement complet dans une aile de prison réservée. Elles occupent leurs journées en chantant, en faisant de la couture, comme elles le faisaient dans le ranch de George Spahn, l'un des repaires de la « famille ». Les employées de la prison cherchant cependant à les aider psychologiquement. Car les trois filles sont toujours sous l'emprise de leur gourou. La plupart de leurs phrases commencent souvent par « Charlie dit que » et même leur nom leur a été donné à leur entrée dans la « famille ». C'est le début d'un combat pour retrouver leur identité et leur nom.

The film opens with a flashforward to moments after the shooting. This is quickly followed by a scene with Valerie Solanas (Lili Taylor) in custody for the shooting of Andy Warhol (Jared Harris). The film then takes us back to a time when Valerie is living in New York making a living as a sex worker. A series of further flashbacks point to her difficult childhood, and success in studying psychology at college. Here, Valerie discovers that she is a lesbian, that she can write, and that she has a distinctive view of the world. This leads her to New York City and its downtown underworld. Through her friend Stevie (Martha Plimpton), she meets Candy Darling (Stephen Dorff), who in turn introduces her to Andy Warhol.

Malgré tout, elle envoie anonymement le mémo à la presse afin de tenter d'empêcher la guerre qui s'annonce inutile et aux conséquences désastreuses. Mais, en choisissant d'exposer cette vaste conspiration politique, la lanceuse d'alerte met en danger sa vie, son couple, sa liberté et son sens du patriotisme. Car sa décision est considérée comme une trahison aux yeux des services secrets britanniques.
