An American bomber is shot down on the Norwegian coast during World War II. The airmen bail out and land at different locations. In spite of the German search for them, the Norwegian resistance picks them up and hides them in the attic of the local church, a center of operations. Things become tense, however, when the hideout is spotted by a notorious collaborator, and soon the protagonist, Hans (Henki Kolstad), has to get the airmen to Sweden.

Un village montagnard en Norvège au XVII siècle. An-Magritt est née d'un viol. Attachée au pilori, sa mère se suicide en se jetant dans la rivière. Il revient au grand-père de prendre soin de l'enfant. Conçue dans la violence, c'est grâce à la charité qu'An-Magritt doit son salut. Sa beauté et son farouche caractère attirent l'attention d'un ingénieur allemand dont elle finit par s'éprendre. Alors que les conditions de vie et de travail sont déjà extrêmement pénibles pour les villageois, le chambellan Jochum, prétextant de graves difficultés, annonce de terribles restrictions.

Just after Sigurd Helmer (Claes Hill) is ordained a bishop, his archrival Tornkvist (Georg Løkkeberg) hands over a letter to the police claiming Helmer obtained his position through foul play. A power struggle between the two ensues which has serious implications for Helmer. The letter proves that Helmer has slandered his competitor Tornkvist in anonymous letters.

The protagonist is a jovial bus driver, well beloved by his passengers, essentially the whole community around him. The bus, however, is old, and needs to be replaced. The bus driver himself is also needed as a handyman for all the people around him, assisting with stray cattle, household machines, children's homework, errands of all kinds, and at one occasion, assisting birth. Progress is however leaving him behind, and the local county council plots on a solution, involving a new bus and driver. The community revolts, and the local midwife (married to the mayor) intervenes with all the locals to keep the bus driver, who ends up keeping his job in a new bus.
