Culprit (French:Le coupable) is a 1917 French silent drama film directed by André Antoine and starring Romuald Joubé, Sylvie and Jacques Grétillat. It was based on a novel by François Coppée. In 1937 it was remade as a sound film Culprit.

Synopsis

En février 191Chrétien Forgeat, un jeune homme d'une vingtaine d'années, est accusé de meurtre. L'avocat devant tenir l'acte d'accusation, Chrétien Lescuyer, fait un aveu surprenant à la Cour : il est le père de l'accusé !

Le marquis de la Seiglière revient en France une fois la Révolution terminée. Ses biens, qui avaient été vendus comme propriétés matérielles, avaient été achetés par Stamply, un agriculteur. Ce dernier les rend au marquis Stamply. Hélène de la Seiglière, la fille du marquis, s'occupe du vieil homme. Mais celui-ci, dévasté par la mort de son fils, meurt. Quelque temps plus tard, trois personnes viennent vivre dans le manoir : M. de Paubert, son fils Raoul, et Destournelles, un avocat rusé et impitoyablement ambitieux. De Paubert espère marier son fils à Hélène de la Seiglière et pourrait bien atteindre son objectif, mais pour le retour inattendu de Bernard Stamply, qui a miraculeusement échappé à la mort. Il fait la connaissance d'Helène et les deux jeunes tombent amoureux l'un de l'autre.

Under the sky of Paris, during a day, we see large and small events that occur in the lives of several people whose fates will intertwine. A poor old lady, after searching in vain all day to feed her cats, receives unexpected reward of a mother who, thanks to her, found at night her daughter who had been lost since morning. A young girl, dreaming of love, refuses the advances of her childhood friend to be stabbed to death by a sadistic sculptor. The latter is shot by a policeman who accidentally injured a worker who was returning home after the successful conclusion of a strike. Rushed to hospital, the injured worker is saved through the first open-heart surgery performed by a young surgeon who has just flunked his intern exam.
