In the wine-growing village of Montpaillard, the humorless gamekeeper Parju is determined to bring in the wily poacher Blaireau. (ref: chaîne Histoire) Juin 1940 - Dans un stalag en France, se trouve réunie une équipe de prisonniers particulièrement pittoresques : Caruso, l'électricien, Emile, Ballochet, Pater et ... le Caporal. Dès les premiers jours de sa captivité, le Caporal manifeste déjà un trait essentiel de son caractère. C'est un maniaque de l'évasion. Une première tentative, à laquelle participe à ses côtés Ballochet et Pater, ne parvient même pas à dépasser le mur d'enceinte du camp. Ce premier échec ne décourage pas le Caporal et Pater qui referont un essai – toujours manqué…- dans le wagon qui les emporte vers l'Allemagne. Et les tentatives continuent ! Un essai de fuite de la fabrique de briques où ils travaillent se termine, pour Pater et le Caporal, aux pieds d'une sentinelle… Décidés d'opérer de façon plus « scientifique », les deux amis se préparent des costumes de ville, en teignant en noir des uniformes. L’opposition d'un adjudant les oblige à retarder leur projet et c’est avec Penche à gauche que le Caporal prend la fuite. Cette fois, ils parviennent à prendre le train, aidés par une voyageuse qui n’est autre qu’un prisonnier français déguisé. Cette évasion mènera le Caporal un peu plus loin que les précédentes… à la gare suivante, où il se fera encore arrêter. Après un séjour dans un camp disciplinaire, le Caporal persiste dans ses intentions et grâce à Erika, une jeune allemande, il parvient à se procurer des vêtements civils pour Pater et pour lui. Dans le train qui roule vers la France, l'espoir des deux évadés grandit d'instant en instant. Un bombardement providentiel les sauvera d'un mauvais pas. Les voici à la frontière, la France est en vue…

Claude Ridder (Claude Rich) is leaving hospital after a failed attempt at suicide, when he is asked to participate in a mysterious experiment in time travel by a private research body. They have succeeded in sending mice back unharmed for periods of one minute, but need to send a human back to confirm the subject did actually revisit the past. Claude agrees, but instead of returning promptly as the mice had done, he re-experiences many episodes from his past in a highly disjointed and fragmented manner, in interludes of seconds or minutes.

Despite the English title, in truth there are two French Detectives, based in Rouen. Verjeat is an aging, been-around gumshoe, while Lefevre is his young, callow and cynical associate. The two detectives don't like each other much at first, but this will change. Their current assignment is getting the goods on a corrupt politician. During an election, a fight between the supporters of two of the candidates. In the melee political thugs murder an opponent's volunteer and also kill a cop. The officer has time to warn his colleagues that the killer is Portor, a well-known thug whose brother is campaigning on behalf of law and order candidate Lardatte. Chief inspector Verjeat believes the politician who hired the thugs is as guilty as the murderous goon. His pursuit of Portor is hampered by Lardatte, for whom he has a personal dislike and misses no opportunity to humiliate. Verjeat's pursuit of Lardatte gets him a warning from his superiors. When he embarrasses Lardatte while disarming a hostage (the dead volunteer's father), Verjeat is told he's being promoted and transferred within a week to a posting outside of Rouen. This will take him off the case. As a result he then finds himself with a very short time to capture Portor. Verjeat is sure that his upcoming transfer is courtesy of Lardatte and his police contacts. He speeds up his hunt for the goon and, with Lefévre, he engineers a complicated scheme to buy more time before the transfer.

In the autumn of 1654, an escaped slave seeks refuge at a convent in southern France. After the nuns take him in, his pursuers break into the convent and assault the nuns, searching for the slave. After wounding the mother superior (Pascale Roberts), they close in on their prey. One feisty novitiate, Eloise (Sophie Marceau)—the daughter of the renowned swordsman D'Artagnan (Philippe Noiret) of the famed Three Musketeers—stands up to the intruders, but is shoved aside as they ride off after the frightened slave, who escaped from the evil Duke Crassac de Merindol. Eloise finds a blood-stained piece of paper (a simple laundry list) that the slave used to stop a bleeding wound, and believes it holds some secret code. Later, Eloise is with the mother superior when she dies from her wound. Swearing a sacred oath to avenge her and dressed in men's clothes, Eloise sets out for Paris to elicit the help of her father in tracking down the murderers.
