Synopsis

Heart surgeon Dr. Viren Goenka (Rajit Kapur), his wife Sanjana (Konkona Sen Sharma) and their seven-year-old daughter Anishka (Jhanak Shukla) live in Mumbai. Their joys have just multiplied with Viren being honored with a prestigious award for his contribution to the medical world.

Madhavi plans to expose Rohit by writing an article on his relationship with Gayatri, but her editor kills the article, and she is forced to apologise to Rohit.

The film opens with the historic independence of Bangladesh and after the third Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Starving, two kids named Bikram and Bala are taken in by a man named Lateef (Pankaj Tripathi), who offers them to work for him, and illegally smuggle guns to other men. He cares for them until one day an army officer that they give guns to, tells Lateef to leave one of the two boys behind to work as his child sex slave or otherwise he'll take Lateef's daughter. Bikram hears this and tells Lateef that he'll stay behind in order to save Bala, his friend. Bala then comes back to save Bikram and kills the army officer. The two boys then run away, as Lateef is killed by the police.

In 1995, during the Kashmir conflict, Hilaal Meer, a doctor, agrees to perform an appendectomy on the leader of a pro-separatist group. To avoid detection, he performs the surgery at his house, much to the chagrin of his wife Ghazala, who questions his allegiance. The following day, during a military raid, Hilaal is accused of harbouring terrorists. A shootout ensues at his home, during which the leader of the separatist group is killed and Hilaal is taken away for questioning. The doctor's house is bombed subsequently to kill any other militant hiding inside. Several days later, Hilaal and Ghazala's son, Haider, returns from his university to seek answers about his father's disappearance. Upon arrival, he is shocked to find his mother singing and laughing along with her brother-in-law, Khurram. Unable to understand his mother's behaviour, he begins searching for his father in various police stations and detention camps with the help of his fiancee Arshia, a journalist.
