Madhavi Sharma (Konkona Sen Sharma) arrives in Mumbai and soon lands a journalist job. Her boss Deepak Suri (Boman Irani) gives her the task of reporting celebrity news. The film opens with the historic independence of Bangladesh and after the third Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. In 1995, during the Kashmir conflict, Hilaal Meer, a doctor, agrees to perform an appendectomy on the leader of a pro-separatist group.
