The films opens with April (Taraji P. Henson), a self-centered, alcoholic singer, performing at a nightclub where she works. Les Carabiniers met en scène deux hommes pauvres appelés pour se battre à la guerre et qu'on trompe en leur promettant toutes les richesses du monde. Ulysse (Marino Masè) et Michelangelo (Albert Juross) reçoivent du roi de leur pays fictif des lettres qui leur accordent une liberté complète tant qu'ils se battront : ils auront tout ce qu'ils désirent : piscines, Maseratis, femmes – et le tout aux frais de l'ennemi. Ils quittent tous les deux leurs épouses (Catherine Ribeiro et Geneviève Galéa) et traversent champs de bataille et villages, en détruisant et pillant tout leur saoul. Un château dans une île de Suède. Une curieuse famille : Hugo, un hobereau autocrate ; Eléonore, sa femme ; Agathe, sa sœur, vieille fille attachée aux traditions ; Sébastien, frère d'Eléonore, à qui le lie une affection trouble ; une grand-mère tombée en enfance. Tout ce monde costumé comme au XIXe siècle. Voilà ce que trouve en arrivant le jeune Eric, cousin de Hugo, qui vient profiter de l'hospitalité bien connue de la famille. Très vite, Eléonore lui laisse entendre que ses faveurs s'accordent volontiers. Puis Eric découvre que la première femme de Hugo, Ophélie, devenue folle, vit en recluse dans le château. Eléonore n'est donc pas la femme légitime de Hugo et Eric lui propose de fuir avec lui. Mais de cela, pas question : Eléonore n'a aucune envie de fuir. Hugo, qui a découvert (ou provoqué) la liaison, veut tuer Eric. Agathe et Sébastien partagent son point de vue. Finalement, Eric s'enfuit sur le lac à moitié gelé et tombe d'épuisement aux pieds d'un paysan.

Jerry Warriner (Cary Grant) returns home from a trip, which he falsely says was to Florida, to find that his wife, Lucy (Irene Dunne), is not at home. When she returns in the company of her handsome music teacher, Armand Duvalle (Alexander D'Arcy), Jerry learns that Lucy spent the night in the country with Armand, after his car, they claim, broke down unexpectedly. Lucy then discovers that Jerry did not actually go to Florida, though he went so far as to get an artificial tan and write multiple fake letters home to convince her that he did. Mutual suspicions result in divorce.
