Synopsis

Joe/Narcissus (Jack Bittner) is an ordinary man who has recently signed a complicated lease on a room. As he wonders how to pay the rent, he discovers that he can see the contents of his mind unfolding whilst looking into his eyes in the mirror. He realises that he can apply his gift to others ("If you can look inside yourself, you can look inside anyone!"), and sets up a business in his room, selling tailor-made dreams to a variety of frustrated and neurotic clients. Each of the seven surreal dream sequences in the diegesis is in fact the creation of a contemporary avant-garde and/or surrealist artist, as follows:

Le film, qui utilise la technique du stop-motion, est constitué d'un ensemble hétéroclite de scènes surréalistes. Celles-ci représentent notamment divers objets du quotidien prenant soudainement vie (horloges, chapeaux melon, cravate, pistolet, porte, lance à incendie...), ainsi que plusieurs personnages se déplaçant, disparaissant derrière une balise ou encore caressant leur barbe qui disparaît et réapparaît.

Emak-Bakia shows elements of fluid mechanical motion in parts, rotating artifacts showing his ideas of everyday objects being extended and rendered useless. Kiki of Montparnasse (Alice Prin) is shown driving a car in a scene through a town. Towards the middle of the film Jacques Rigaut appears dressed in female clothing and make-up. Later in the film a caption appears: "La raison de cette extravagance" (the reason for this extravagance). The film then cuts to a car arriving and a passenger leaving with briefcase entering a building, opening the case revealing men's shirt collars which he proceeds to tear in half. The collars are then used as a focus for the film, rotating through double exposures.

The first part tells in an apparently neutral way the inception of the NASA lunar program, emphasizing the issues related to its funding and the necessary public support to the program. NASA regards Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey as the prototype of the show that the space program needs to be in order to gain this support, leading them to design the spacesuits and vessels in a "Hollywood" fashion and even to hire 700 Hollywood technicians, making all of Hollywood stop working on other projects. But the outcome of Apollo 11 is disappointing: although the landing is successful, Neil Armstrong makes a fool of himself and not a single shot of the moonwalk is usable.

Frances McCausland (Erin Chambers), an intelligent and level-headed girl is starting high school a year early. Strange things have been going on in Middleberg: Dogs on people's roofs, alarm clocks going off hours early, eggs all over a teacher's car, gelatin in the swimming pool, and B's spray-painted all over town, including the lockers of the school—except for Frances' locker, which has a B inside it. These pranks point to Frances, but none of it makes sense to her. A guy named Larry Houdini (Eric "Ty" Hodges II) offers to help Frances, saying he's an imaginary friend; proven true as children are the only other ones who can see him. Larry tells Frances that she's being framed by the Boogeyman. Frances has a difficult time believing what Larry tells her, because she's always tried to look at the world like an adult, using logic and facts to explain everything, after her little brother, Darwin, almost died from leukemia a few years ago.
