Dressed to Kill is a 1928 silent film drama produced and distributed by Fox Film Corporation and starring Mary Astor and Edmund Lowe. Astor was "on loan" from Warner Bros. for the film. The New York Times review stated - "Edmund Lowe is capital as the well-tailored Barry. Mr. Barry likes a good round of golf on the day following a fruitful burglary. Mary Astor is charming as Jean and R. O. Pennell makes the most of the "Professor's" rôle.".

Samuel L. Rothafel selected the film for the feature for the first anniversary of the New York City Roxy Theatre.

Synopsis

The gang of a mob boss get suspicious his new girlfriend. Because she's a beautiful young girl they don't believe she would actually associate with the mob and wonder if she's really a police "plant". The mobsters dress nattily to not appear "out of place" in the ritzy neighborhoods prior to a heist.

After her family's mansion is burned down by Yankee soldiers for hiding the rebel leader Captain Sam Starr (Randolph Scott), Belle Shirley (Gene Tierney) vows to take revenge. The story begins with a newsreel summing up the gangster life of John Dillinger in detail. At the end of the newsreel, Dillinger's father (Victor Kilian) walks onto the stage and speaks to the movie audience about his son's childhood back in Indiana. He talks of John’s childhood as having been ordinary and not very eventful, but concedes that his son had ambitions and wanted to go his own way. The young Dillinger left his childhood town to find his fortune in Indianapolis, but soon ran out of money. The scene fades to a restaurant, where he is on a date and finds himself humiliated by the waiter who refuses to accept a check for the meal; unable to pay for the meal, he excuses himself, runs into a nearby grocery store and robs it for $7.20 in cash. He makes the clerk at the store believe he has a gun in his hand under the jacket.
