Drumline: A New Beat is a 2014 American television film directed by Bille Woodruff. It is the sequel to 2002's Drumline. The screenplay, a fictional story about a historically black college marching band, was written by Karen Gist and Regina Hicks. The story is about a young drummer from New York, played by Alexandra Shipp, who enters the fictional Atlanta A&T University and bumps heads with the leader of her new school's drum section. Jordan Calloway, Mario Van Peebles, and LeToya Luckett co-star. Leonard Roberts reprises his role as Sean Taylor, while Nick Cannon reprise his role as Devon Miles. Cannon also serves as the film's executive producer.
The film was released to DVD on March 3, 2015.
Synopsis
The story follows Danielle (Dani) Raymond (Alexandra Shipp), an upper class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents in order to attend a college in Atlanta so she can join - and revitalize - their once-prominent drum line. Dani's quest to become the first female section leader of the drum line in the school's history will be hampered by upperclassmen (including her cousin, Tyree (Jeff Pierre), her feelings for fellow band mate and rival, Jayven (Jordan Calloway), and the school's crosstown rivals.Actors

But temptation soon shows up in the form of Maria's ex-boyfriend Luis, the leader of the 718 crew, and a fierce dancer who doesn't take competition lightly. Recognizing her one chance to break free of Luis' influence and stay positive, Maria joins the HD's and prepares to go toe-to-toe with reigning champs the 718's on national television. If Maria and her new crew can just come out on top, she'll finally be able to cut her ties from the past, and follow in the footsteps of her idol Honey.

Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba) works as a bartender, a record store clerk and a dancer teacher at a local community center run by her mother in New York. Having dreams to make it as a backup dancer in music videos, Honey and rival Katrina (Laurieann Gibson) are recorded dancing in the club where the former works. That same night, Honey and friend Gina (Joy Bryant) leave the club and encounter some kids dancing. On the outside Zoe Reynard seems to have the perfect life. She has a perfect marriage to her husband Jason and the couple share two kids. Despite this, Zoe is not happy in her marriage. After sex one night with her husband, Zoe is displeased that Jason was done so she wakes up to watch porn and plays with a dildo. She attends an art show for a possibly new client to sign on with her company and runs into the artist of the show, Quinton Canosa, and the two quickly share some flirtation. The film centers on Devon Miles (Cannon), a teen who has just graduated from a high school in New York City. Upon graduating, Devon heads to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the fictitious Atlanta A&T University, a historically black college that takes enormous pride in its marching band. Devon was personally invited to attend on full scholarship by Dr. James Lee (Jones), head of the band, for his prodigious talents. The A&T band separates itself from its competitors by requiring all members to read music, by focusing on various styles of music rather than what music is currently popular on the radio, and dedication to the teamwork emphasized "one band, one sound" concept. The band has a preseason that is similar to an athletic team's induction in that it is very physically and mentally difficult. It challenges all recruits to push themselves past what they previously thought were their limits. At the end of preseason, the musicians audition for spots on the field, and Devon is the only freshman to make P1, the highest level player. While going through his rigorous process, Devon also finds time to romance an upperclassman dancer, Laila (Saldana).

In 1987, Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) arrives in Los Angeles from Oklahoma with dreams of becoming a singer. On Christmas Eve, 1989, aspiring filmmaker Mark Cohen, and his roommate, Roger Davis, learn that the rent previously waived by their former friend and landlord, Benjamin “Benny” Coffin III, is due. At the same time, their former roommate Tom Collins shows up and gets mugged in an alleyway. Meanwhile, Mark and Roger meet with Benny, who tells them he plans to evict the homeless from the nearby lot and build a cyber studio in its place.
