With her new wealth, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) purchases an apartment in Stockholm. On returning to Sweden after nearly a year living abroad, Salander reconnects with her former lover Miriam Wu (Yasmine Garbi) and offers her free use of her previous apartment in return for forwarding her mail. Later, Salander confronts her guardian, Nils Bjurman (Peter Andersson) after hacking into his mail and discovering he has an appointment booked with a tattoo removal specialist. Threatening him with his own gun, she warns him not to remove the tattoo that she etched on his abdomen as revenge for sexually abusing her, marking him as "a pervert, a rapist and a sadistic pig".

In December 2002, Mikael Blomkvist, publisher of Millennium magazine, loses a libel case involving allegations he published about billionaire financier Hans-Erik Wennerström. He is sentenced to three months in prison and a hefty fine. Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant but damaged surveillance agent and hacker, is hired by Henrik Vanger, the patriarch of the wealthy Vanger family, to investigate Blomkvist. Smith is an 18-year-old film student who identifies sexually as "undeclared". He has been having strange dreams. He is going to college with his best friend, Stella, whom he has known since junior high. Smith finds a note saying that he is the "chosen son". He has a roommate, Thor, whom he lusts after, regretting that Thor is straight. Stella goes to a party with Smith, but hooks up with another girl, Lorelei. The film takes place in 1983, primarily in Amsterdam and centers in a group of five Dutch friends: Willem Holleeder, Cor van Hout, Jan Boellard, Martin Erkamps and Frans Meijer. Looking for easy money, they decide to kidnap Heineken owner, the tycoon Freddy Heineken in order to achieve a very high ransom. Although successfully capturing Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer, the group eventually face difficulties due to their lack of experience in crime. They fail to negotiate with the police, and Cor has to deal with the responsibilities of taking care of his pregnant wife, Sonja. After Heineken is finally released by the police, Willem and Cor flee to Paris and Willem frequently tells Cor to not call Sonja because the calls could be traced by the police. Although initially reluctant, Cor gives in to his emotions, resulting in the two being arrested by the French police while leaving their apartment.

A mad serial killer terrorizes Stockholm in the hot summer of 1993, by abducting, raping and strangling young school girls to death in the green parks of the inner town. The film commences on a sunny summer day in Yorkshire when Tamsin (Emily Blunt) meets Mona (Natalie Press). The former travels on horseback and chances upon Mona, who is resting in the grass. The two girls come from completely opposing background; Tamsin is from an upper-middle-class family and has recently been suspended from boarding school for being a bad influence; drinking alcohol. Mona, on the other hand, comes from a dysfunctional family, and her brother, Phil (Paddy Considine), who has recently been released from prison, is the only remaining member of her family still alive. Both of the girls seem to regard their lives as mundane. The new acquaintances head home together, one on horseback and the other on an engineless scooter.
