Encounters of the Spooky Kind (Chinese: 鬼打鬼) is a 1980 Hong Kong martial arts comedy horror film written and directed by Sammo Hung, who also starred in the lead role. The film was produced by Hung's production company Bo Ho Film Company. It was released as Spooky Encounters in the US. It is sometimes listed as Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind, more blatantly mimicking the title of the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). The film was the progenitor of the jiangshi film genre and one of Hong Kong's first kung fu horror comedies.
There is one other stand-alone sequel starring Hung and Lam Ching-ying Encounters of the Spooky Kind II (aka Close Encounters of the Spooky Kind 2) which has no relation to Encounters of the Spooky Kind. The Chinese name for the movie literally translates as ghost fights ghost.
Synopsis
The film starts with Bold Cheung having a nightmare about ghosts. Bold Cheung is challenged to spend the night in an abandoned house where he must peel an apple in front of a mirror. If he breaks the skin then something bad will happen. Upholding his mantle as the boldest he accepts. However, that night whilst peeling the apple his friends trick him. Whilst scolding his friend for the prank a real ghost appears and snatches Cheung's friend away. The ghost reaches for Cheung but he cuts its hand off and then quickly shattering the mirror, causing the house to collapse.Actors

Leung Chang (Yuen Biao) is a young man in a wealthy family living in Foshan in the mid-19th century. He is a martial artist trained by two instructors in his father's employ. He has fought over three hundred times in Foshan and won every fight, but unbeknownst to him, his father has arranged for his servant Yee Tung-choi (Chan Lung) to bribe Chang's opponents to lose to him in order to protect him. This has caused Chang to believe that he is a world-class fighter, but in truth he hasn't even mastered the basics of kung fu and any real fighter could easily defeat him. Lam Sai-wing (Sammo Hung), also known as Butcher Wing, is a student of Wong Fei-hung (Kwan Tak-hing). Butcher Wing's long-lost brother Lam Sai-kwong (Chiang Kam) comes to town with his beautiful bride Yuet Mei (Tang Jing). Two brothers Lee Chun Fei (Wong Ha), a Wing Chun stylist, and Lee Chun Pang (Peter Chan), a Five Animals stylist, encounters a town bully Yeung Wai (Lee Hoi Sang) harassing a civilian. Together, with their own distinctive kung fu style, the brothers defeat Yeung and are praised by the townsmen. Later, when the townsmen debate on who is the better martial artist of the two, the brothers become bitter rivals and start their own martial arts schools. Then a rich man Chin Fung (Phillip Ko) hires the two brothers to teach his sons, the crooked-eyed Big Dog (Addy Sung), and Little Dog (Chung Fat). Big Dog becomes Fei's disciple and Little Dog becomes Pang's disciple. Meanwhile, a local young kung fu fanatic Sei Leng Chai (Stephen Tung) is trying to create his own kung fu style and befriends a wandering winemaker Fei Chai (Sammo Hung), who is an expert martial artist. Fei Chai advises Sei Leng Chai to learn every style of kung fu he can and he starts studying from Fei Chai, Fei and Pang. Later, it is revealed that Yeung is actually Chin's kung fu senior and he sent his fake sons to study under them to understand their styles more. Chin wants to cripple Fei and Pang to avenge Yeung. As they fight, Sei Leng Chai comes to help and the brothers eventually reconcile their brotherhood. Sei Leng kills Chin and Yeung arrives to defeat and capture Sei Leng Chai while Fei Chai comes to the rescue and kills Yeung.

Hung Tai Kong aka "Rice Pot" (Sammo Hung) and Chan Yin Tung aka "Chimney" (Frankie Chan) are two brothers who work with their master Kam Ming (Lau Hak Suen) and his daughter Ann (Didi Pang) as a team of pickpockets. Husker, is sent to the Shaolin Temple by the Iron Fisted Monk (Chen Sing), after he saves Sammo from a beating by the Manchu's. After being trained by his master (James Tien) he runs away from the temple, only to be confronted by his master and forced to take the four tests. Whilst this is happening, Fung Hark-On is indulging in his passion for raping women, and is virtually above the law as he is a powerful Manchu officer. He begins by raping Liang's (Chu Ching) sister, who then commits suicide and makes Liang a very angry man. Liang takes his revenge by killing one of those pesky Manchus but everyone thinks Sammo is responsible.

Mr. Tsan (Bryan Leung), is a doctor and master of Wing Chun, whose martial lineage traces back to the style's founder. He is grudgingly persuaded by Fei Chun (Sammo Hung), his lead student, to teach kung fu to Cashier Hua (Casanova Wong), a patient hiding out at his residence. Hua had previously overheard a businessman named Mo (Fung Hak-on) and several of his men plotting to take over the town by killing the head of the town. Unfortunately, Hua made the mistake of warning Mo's wormy henchman, Master Yao (Dean Shek) and a trap was set that nearly cost the poor cashier his life. Whilst in hiding, Hua sends Fei Chun to warn the town head. Ignores the advice, the town head is later attacked by Mo's men, although it is unclear whether he escapes or is killed after a protracted fight.

Chun-yau (Bryan Leung) was adopted as a little orphan boy by a humble rich man under one rainy-night who already had a mean young son. Chun-yau has developed into a fine kung fu fighter who is on the run with his newly-wedded wife Yuet-yee (Fanny Wang) from his step-brother Cho-wing (Chang Yi), whom is madly after his sister-in-law. The jealous son holds a grudge against his stepbrother because he blame Chun-yau for the lost of his eye (and now wears a jade patch over the eye). Now, Cho-wing has made it his goal to hunt down Chun-yau and his bride, prompting the newlyweds to spend their lives together running in fear from the gang leader. One fine day, Fatty (Sammo Hung) spots Chun-yau helping an old man from being crushed by a loaded-cart. Fatty challenges Chun-yau but is ultimately defeated. However, Chun-yau is not interested in becoming Fatty's master since he is more worried about his own domestic problems. Apparently Fatty has promised his ancestors that he shall learn proper kung fu by training under the man who beats him (and Chun-yau is the first to do so.). However, Chun-yau and his wife are trying to keep a low profile and they want nothing to do with Fatty, as all he does is attract attention. Fatty, meanwhile, can’t help but wonder why such a great martial artist lives in fear.

Although a hapless telephone salesman, Success Hung finds himself engaged in a selling war with a new saleswoman, Miss Cheng, that soon proves to be the least of his problems. In one madcap night, all of these problems are solved with poor old Hung naturally in the middle of it all.
