However, one day Hüseyin is forced to go to İstanbul and leave behind his beloved village. In the big city, Hüseyin will receive the biggest support from his clarinet and later from a bar singer called Firuzan (Demet Akbağ). Firuzan, who storms İstanbul’s night clubs with her songs, already leads a very colorful and highly complicated life, which, with Hüseyin’s inclusion, gets all the more colorful with comedy and action.

Guner Sernikli is a government official who, with his wife and their wheelchair bound daughter, has been assigned as the head librarian to this isolated province, virtually an exile since there is no library in the village. The family is warmly welcome, but these are the years of political anarchy and leftist/rightist clashes in big cities and the youth of the village inevitably follow the tides. They arrive in Vizontele, just as the situation is becoming really absurd. Guner brings wisdom; his daughter Tuba brings beauty, innocence and love. Some like the Mayor, Nazmi Dogan and crazy Emin appreciate these things but they are in the minority and confusion continues to reign. The story is based on the memories of writer-director Yılmaz Erdoğan of the last summer of his childhood in Hakkâri, Turkey in 1980.

The year is 1888. A 7-year-old child was first seen running on a vast field to scare the crows off of the meadows of Thessalonica, and then he falls from a tree while reaching out to a nightingale. Everything goes black. The child who falls from the tree is Mustafa, who would have grown to become the founder of the Turkish Republic and be given the surname Atatürk, that is, if he did not fall to his "death" that day. The film fast-forwards to over a century later, to the year 2007. There is no savior named Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Turkey’s history, no War of Independence has been fought, Ankara has not become the country’s capital and the country continues its existence as the Ottoman Republic, ruled by the Sultan Osman VII (Ata Demirer), who has become little more than a figurehead and a source of ridicule by foreign dignitaries, especially by the United States of America.

Rather than a straightforward narrative, the film presents Liszt's life through a series of episodes. At the start of the film, Liszt is caught in bed with Marie d'Agoult by her husband the Count d'Agoult. The Count challenges Liszt to a fight with sabres but Marie begs the count to let her share Liszt's fate. The Count then orders his staff to trap Liszt and Marie into the body of a piano, nailing it shut, and then leaving it on railroad tracks.
