Tourné en coproduction avec la Bulgarie, pays d'où sont originaires le directeur de la photographie, l'ingénieur du son et les monteuses, c'est également le premier film en couleurs du réalisateur.
En outre, s'il se réfère à des faits réels comme dans ses précédents films, il les puise ici dans une œuvre littéraire, le roman Amour et révolution d'Abderrahman Ammar, plus connu sous le pseudonyme d'Ibn El Wha. Il y relate la vie d'un chef de la résistance, Mosbah Jarbou, moyennant quelques modifications romanesques.
Synopsis
L'action s'étale sur dix années, de 1951 à 1961, pendant le processus de résistance contre les Français et de conquête de l'indépendance. Jarbou, amoureux de sa cousine Rebh, se voit supplanté par son cousin Ali, goumier de l'armée française, soutenu par ses chefs. Il est emprisonné pour s'être insurgé contre cette injustice.Actors

War is upon Denmark, and King Valdemar II sends his only son and heir in safety to Eskil, bishop of Ravensburg, who is instructed to educate the prince. As soon as the king leaves the country to go to war, the bishop makes plans about seizing the crown for himself. Accidentally the prince and the kitchen-boy Aske overhear the schemes of Eskil and his conspirators, but are seen and pursued by a one-eyed man, who wants to take revenge on the king for leaving him behind on a battlefield where he lost his eye. In the late 1930s, in Ferrara, a group of young friends get together for afternoons of tennis and happy times. Some of them are Jewish and a rising tide of Fascism has imposed increasingly anti-Semitic restrictions in their lives. Barred from regular tennis clubs, they go to play at the grand, walled estate owned by the Finzi-Contini, a wealthy, intellectual and sophisticated Jewish family. The two young Finzi-Contini, Alberto and his sister Micol, have organized a tennis tournament. It is the Second World War and the Royal Air Force attacks German V-1 flying bomb installations during the early summer of 1944. The de Havilland Mosquito fighter-bomber aircraft of Squadron Leader David "Scotty" Scott (David Buck) is shot down during a low-level bombing raid on a V-1 launching site, and Scott and his navigator/bomb-aimer are reportedly killed. His wingman and friend, then-Flight Lieutenant (later insignia Royal Canadian Air Force squadron leader) Quint Munroe (David McCallum) comforts Scott's wife Beth (Suzanne Neve) and a romance soon develops, rekindling one that they had had years earlier.
