Le tueur à gages Frank Bono revient à New York, la veille de Noël, pour exécuter un contrat : il doit impérativement liquider un petit "caïd" désormais indésirable. Il prévient ses commanditaires de l'accomplissement en bonne et due forme de son travail, mais au moment d'être payé, il est pris en chasse, tué et abandonné dans un marais.
