The film's music (score and soundtrack) is composed by A. R. Rahman, and it was very well received upon release. The choreography in the film was also viewed as a highlight. This high-budget production won positive reviews and became a blockbuster at the box office. The film was remade in Hindi as The Gentleman in 1994 by Mahesh Bhatt starring Chiranjeevi.
Synopsis
A story begins with a swashbuckling thief, also a master of disguise, who not only targets jewellers but also government agencies is being tracked down by Azhagar Nambi (Charan Raj), an efficient Police officer, who takes things a bit too personal. The story cuts to Krishnamoorthy alias Kicha (Arjun), a respected citizen who runs a home-based pappadam business.Actors

Ramanujam Iyengar, also known as Ambi, is an orthodox Brahmin and a straightforward consumer protection advocate living in Chennai. He expects everyone to follow the laws and prosecutes those who flout them. However, his efforts fail as circumstantial evidence always seems to favour the accused. He also fails to raise civic awareness due to pervasive corruption and a general lack of seriousness. Frustrated at his inability to bring about a change in society, his suppressed anger manifests itself in an alter-ego named "Anniyan", a grim reaper-themed serial killer who punishes corrupt and indifferent people. Anniyan creates a website, compiles a list of wrongdoers from his site, and kills them using punishments described in the Garuda Purana, one of the ancient Hindu scriptures.

The story focuses on Television Journalist Pughazhendhi (Arjun) working for "Q TV". During riots triggered by a fight between some college students and bus drivers, which threaten to touch upon the touchy issue of castes, the CM of the state Raghuvaran reveals his unwillingness to take strong action to quell the violence for fear of estranging any of his political bases. To set things right, he then appears on a live interview with Pughazhendi, who had coincidentally captured the CM's earlier unwillingness to take a stand, on camera.

Venkat Ramakrishnan (Srikanth), Sevarkodi Senthil (Jiiva) and Panchavan Parivendan aka Pari (Vijay) are three first year engineering students who share a room in the hostel of Ideal Engineering College (IEC), Chennai. Venkat studies engineering to pursue his father's wishes over his own wish – to become a wildlife photographer, while Senthil studies engineering to get his family out of poverty. Pari, on the other hand, studies engineering for his simple passion for machines and devices. He believes that one should follow excellence, not success, as success will take care of itself if excellence is followed. Sivaji (Rajinikanth), an Indian software systems architect, returns to India from the United States. He aims to establish a non-profit trust called the Sivaji Foundation to build a network of hospitals and educational institutions to serve the poor free of charge. However, Adiseshan (Suman), an influential businessman, sees Sivaji as his competitor with the fact of the matter being that he runs profit-making educational institutions and hospitals. Sivaji is forced to bribe the corrupt civil service, but eventually, the bribes demanded become so high that he has to mortgage his house and sell his car to pay them. When Sivaji goes to court, he loses the case filed against him by Adiseshan regarding the methods Sivaji had used to open his foundation as a result of bribing numerous government officials. Simultaneously, Sivaji falls in love with a girl named Tamizhselvi (Shriya Saran). However, upon asking for his horoscope, an astrologer warns that their union will result in Sivaji's death. When Tamizhselvi refuses the proposal due to her concern for Sivaji, he calms her fears and convinces her to marry him.

After a decade of research, the scientist Dr. Vaseegaran creates a sophisticated android robot with the help of his assistants, Siva and Ravi, in order to commission it into the Indian Army. He introduces the robot, named Chitti, at a robotics conference in Chennai. Chitti helps Sana, Vaseegaran's medical student girlfriend, cheat in her examination, then saves her from being assaulted by a group of thugs. Lingesan (Vikram) is a bodybuilder from the suburbs of Chennai, whose main ambition is to become Mr. India. He wins the title of Mr. Tamil Nadu, which gives him entry to the Mr. India pageant. He is infatuated by Diya (Amy Jackson), a leading supermodel. Prabhu, the chairman of Chennai's Government Arts College, is asked by his Principal to invite the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Kakarlal Sathyanarayana Moorthy, to be the chief guest on the annual day of the college. When he goes to invite Kakarlal, he bumps into his daughter, Shruthi, instantly falling in love with her. To propose his love for her, he even joins in the same dance class as her. She too subsequently gets to know more about him and falls in love with him. Since there is considerable fear of terrorism in the state, Kakarlal does not permit his daughter to travel anywhere without bodyguards. On one occasion, she manages to give them the slip and runs away with Prabhu at a dance festival. Shortly after, there is the threat of a bomb being planted. Shruthi is immediately brought home and Prabhu is arrested. Shruthi is forbidden to see Prabhu. After being beaten severely, Prabhu is released from police custody and taken back home, tended by his police father Kathiresan. He then goes to meet Shruthi unaware of the changed circumstances. This is where he finds evidence that will lead him to a hideout of bomb specialist Mallikarjuna who is the mastermind of all the bomb blasts. Prabhu realizes that Mallikarjuna has been working for Kakarlal to kill innocent civilians with bombs. Kakarlal pays Mallikarjuna to put a bomb in Government General Hospital. Kakarlal betrays Mallikarjuna by killing him with a (bomb radio). Unfortunately, Mallikarjuna survives but he's wounded. Mallikarjuna changes the time, so the bomb can explode earlier. When Kakarlal shows up, he realizes that Mallikarjuna's still alive but Mallikarjuna disappears again. Prabhu and other people take the patients out of the Government General Hospital. Kakarlal, Kakarlal's wife, and Shruthi get stuck in an elevator. Prabhu finds the bomb and manages to get out of the hospital as soon as possible, so he can throw the bomb off the bridge into the water. The bomb explodes in the water. After Shruthi gets out of the elevator, a wounded Mallikarjuna breaks from the top and electrocutes Kakarlal to death. Mallikarjuna also dies because of blood loss. The film ends with the reunion of Prabhu and Shruthi. It's presumed that Prabhu and Shruthi got married.

Munna (Siddharth Narayan), Babu Kalyanam aka Bob Galy (Bharath), Juju (Nakul), Krishna (Thaman) and Kumar (Manikandan) are five friends. They come from different backgrounds – Munna from a middle-class family, Bob Galy from a Telugu-speaking family, Juju from an academic-achieving family, Krishna from a rich family and Kumar from a poor family. But all of them have common interests – spending their time smoking, downing alcohol, ogling girls, watching pornography and complaining about their parents. Much to the chagrin of their parents, they have no interest in studies. They meet a depressed middle-age man, Mangalam (Vivek) in a bar one day and help him home after he passes out. Although they first use him as a source to get alcohol, Mangalam enjoys their company and becomes a mentor of sorts for the boys.They even go as far as hiring a prostitute(whose contact was obtained from mangalam) to have sex with while Munna's parents are out of station (Bhuvaneswari), but all of them back down at the last moment.

Nachiappan (Nassar) is a restaurateur in Los Angeles, USA. His twin sons Vishwanathan (Visu) and Ramamoorthy (Ramu) (both played by Prashanth), are medical students, who help him out in the evenings and alongside with the restaurant's chief cook, Juno (Senthil) who enjoys on weekends.One evening, Vishwanathan goes to the airport to check on the family's supply concession and sees that some fellow Indians – Madhumitha (Aishwarya Rai), her brother Madhesh (Raju Sundaram) and their grandmother Krishnaveny (Lakshmi) – have difficulty with an address. He pitches in to help and learns that they just flew in from India so that Krishnaveny can undergo a crucial surgery to remove her brain tumour.
