A missionary on his way to Africa has his suitcase stolen in Naples. While trying to locate it he comes to realise the suffering and povery in the city, and decides his work is needed there.
Synopsis
En route vers l'Afrique, un prêtre missionnaire se fait voler sa valise à la gare de Naples. Dans sa tentative pour la retrouver, il découvre une ville en proie à la misère, et notamment celle des enfants. Il décide alors de s'installer à Naples et fonde un asile pour héberger de très jeunes voleurs exploités par les adultes...Actors

Duncombe is the UK Consul General in Florence, Italy. He becomes a widower when his two sons, Andrew and Miles, are still young kids. Andrew, the eldest, apparently reacts with adult maturity to the loss of his mother, looking after little Miles, an attempt to find a way out of such premature heart-crushing loss. Miles constantly blames Andrew for his mischievous behavior but his brother valiantly takes said blame as his personality is that of a grown up, or at least that is what he tries to be. The father, given his mandate, is often absent, both physically and emotionally, especially toward Andrew. It will be at the end that Duncombe will acknowledge his mistakes when finding himself at a father's point of no return.

Mastro Geppetto is a poor carpenter with no wife and no children. The man sis institution very lonely, and when trading a piece of wood with his colleague Mastro Cherry, he decides to build a puppet that faces him company. The puppet is Pinocchio. On night comes the Fairy in the carpenter's shop to visit Pinocchio. The woman makes a deal with the puppet: if he behaves well, giving honor to the father, he will become a human being, otherwise he will remain a piece of wood. Pinocchio promises, and magically becomes a kid. But the temptations of life are many, and Pinocchio runs away from home, not going to school, like his father Geppetto wants, and he enters illegally in the company of puppets of the cruel Mangiafoco. Pinocchio, helped by the Fairy, tries to be kind and respectful, but by his brat character, he always brings himself in the midst of trouble.

Vittorio De Sica plays the middle-aged marshal Antonio Carotenuto of the Carabinieri in a remote fictional Italian mountain village named Sagliena (actually the village of Castel San Pietro Romano, in Lazio). He's anxious to marry, and selects young Maria De Ritis (Gina Lollobrigida) as his bride; but she is already in love with De Sica's shy subordinate Pietro Stelluti (played by Roberto Risso). Mistaking her headstrong behavior as promiscuity, De Sica makes advances towards her, but she spurns him. Forsaking the girl to the arms of Risso, De Sica decides to settle for village midwife Annarella Mirziano (Marisa Merlini). Au cours de la période la plus sombre du régime communiste en Pologne, deux frères de 11 et 14 ans, Jedrek et Grzes, vivent au quotidien les difficultés de leurs parents, miséreux et tourmentés par les autorités polonaises.
