Dans les années 30, un trio de chanteurs ambulants composé du petit Gianinno, de sa mère et de son grand-père, accompagnés d'un funambule et de musiciens, arrivent dans un village d'Europe Centrale. L'auberge du village est tenue par un homme étrange, l'une de ses clientes est une cartomancienne réputée pour son avarice. Au cours d'un incendie, la cartomancienne se fait dérober son magot et porte plainte en laissant entendre que le voleur est le petit Gianinno. Celui-ci s'enfuit durant la nuit avec son orgue de Barbarie et son âne. Le vrai voleur, un certain "Diable Noir", ayant caché le butin à l'intérieur du piano du jeune garçon, se lance à sa poursuite à travers les Alpes.

Le maréchal Krieger, un terrible dictateur, attrape la peste blanche, une maladie contre laquelle seul le docteur Galén possède le remède pouvant amener à la guérison. Cependant, comme le docteur ne veut livrer son secret qu'en échange de la paix, le dictateur accède à sa demande et le fait venir chez lui. Galén est tué par la foule avide de guerre, mais, alors qu'il se sait perdu, le redoutable dictateur signe quand même l'armistice. Le docteur ayant heureusement partagé son savoir avec un médecin étranger, l'humanité sera sauvée.

Spoiled playboy Bob Merrick's (Rock Hudson) reckless behavior causes him to lose control of his speed boat. Rescuers send for the nearest resuscitator, located in Dr. Phillips's house across the lake. While the resuscitator is being used to save Merrick, Dr. Phillips suffers a heart attack and dies. Merrick ends up a patient at Dr. Phillips's clinic, where most of the doctors and nurses resent the fact that Merrick inadvertently caused Dr. Phillips's death.

Ralph is a retired police officer who has worked as a New York cop for over 38 years. He plans on visiting his niece Jennifer in Chicago for the holidays. Jennifer is a successful businesswoman and the single mother of her young son Brian. She grew up all her life mostly at Ralph's, as her mother was constantly traveling and her father died when she was very young. Since then, she has lost her Christmas spirit. Captain David O'Keefe (Burt Lancaster), seeking his fortune in the 19th century South Pacific, decides to enlist island natives to harvest copra, but runs into a wall of cultural problems. Backed by a Chinese dentist, he obtains a ship and sets about harvesting copra while fending off cantankerous native chieftains and ambitious German empire-builders. The natives, happy with their existence, see no reason to work hard to obtain copra, either for a German trading company or for O'Keefe. He finally motivates them by showing them how to produce large quantities of Rai stones, the stone money of Yap, their valued coinage.
