Luther Caldwell, un millionnaire de New-York, demande à Cliff Redfern, le contremaître de son ranch du Montana, de prendre avec lui son fils Ned, 24 ans, dans l'Ouest pour le guérir de son ennui. La fille de Caldwell, Prudence, qui pense que Redfern est un ours mal léché, aide Ned à l'éviter mais Redfern entre dans un restaurant à la mode, prend au lasso Ned, et l'emmène au train, et Prudence et son père les suivent. Pendant que Redfern lit un ouvrage sur l'étiquette pour améliorer ses manières, Ned, excité par les histoires que raconte Redfern, émerge de sa mélancolie. Pour aider Ned, Redfern câble au ranch pour demander à McCann de mettre en place un faux vol de bétail au moment de leur arrivée, mais McCann en profite pour réellement voler le troupeau et en accuser Redfern. Comme Prudence s'en prend à Redfern, il la met sur son cheval et part à la poursuite des voleurs. Après la capture et la confession de McCann, Redfern attrape au lasso Prudence alors qu'elle est sur la plateforme su train en partance pour New-York, et ils se marient.

As described in a film magazine, Square Shootin' Harry Lanyon (Carey), proprietor of a gambling hall in Arizona, is in love with his ward Ruth Watson (Hope). However, he believes that she is in love with his pal Billy Lanyon (Landis), and intends to let the youth have the girl. While in this uncertain mind about his own love affair, Harry begins to read Bret Harte's story "The Outcasts of Poker Flat" and begins to liken himself to John Oakhurst in the story. Oakhurst (Carey) befriends a girl named Sophy (Hope) on a riverboat. The girl is being deserted by a gambler named Ned Stratton (Harris), who had promised to marry her, and Oakhurst saves her from self-destruction. Oakhurst brings Sophy to the questionable neighborhood of Poker Flat, and encourages her to marry some youth who loves her, although Oakhurst also cares for her. Stratton reappears and Oakhurst makes it his business to rid the camp of him. Later, the Vigilantes swoop down upon Poker Flat and, in a reform movement, send Oakhurst, Mother Shipton, the Duchess, and others into the hills. Sophy and her young husband follow. They are all caught in a violent storm from which only the latter two emerge alive. Harry Lanyon is impressed with the Bret Harte story, and vows that he will not repeat the mistake of Oakhurst and in sacrificing his love for another. Harry then discovers that Ruth loves him and not Billy after all.

Mrs. Newell is jealous of her son Oliver's interest in Penelope Mason and she does everything she can to keep the two apart. She fakes an illness and travels to a resort with Oliver, separating him from his sweetheart. However, while there, he catches the eye of the designing Enid Morton, a married woman. Enid’s husband is the jealous type. After some near-disastrous situations with Enid's suspicious husband, Mrs. Newell realizes the mistake she has made in keeping her son away from Penelope. She convinces Penelope to come to Oliver's rescue.
