Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti (titre français : Maître Puntila et son valet Matti) est un film autrichien réalisé par Alberto Cavalcanti sorti en 1960.

Il s'agit d'une adaptation de la pièce de Bertolt Brecht.

Synopsis

Le propriétaire terrien finlandais Puntila est devenu un bon ami après avoir bu et raconte ses soucis à son chauffeur Matti. Il veut marier sa fille Eva à un attaché diplomatique, mais cela lui fait mal de devoir donner à son gendre comme une dot un morceau de sa forêt.

Joe Saunders and his brother Fred arrive in London from Leybourne in Kent, and they go to the Elephant and Castle pub, the haunt of Tom Sayers, a leading boxer. While his brother, an aspiring boxer, is having a trial bout with Sayers, Joe Saunders is persuaded to sing a song to entertain the bar's customers. Initially reluctant, he soon gathers his confidence, and his performance is extremely well received by the audience. The impressed landlord offers him a pound a week and two free beers a night if he will perform on a regular basis. Saunders’s brother, meanwhile, is too ill from his past career as a miner to make a serious boxer and he returns home to Leybourne.

Sur la montagne se dresse la ferme, le "nid de vautours", dont le propriétaire profite du mariage avec une femme séduisante et beaucoup plus jeune, ainsi que la contrebande, avec laquelle il aimerait un jour acheter la taverne du village. Une épine dans le flanc de l'un et de l'autre est le jeune gendarme : il veut mettre fin à ce mariage comme à la contrebande - d'abord parce qu'il aime la beauté de la montagne et, deuxièmement, il a besoin d'un succès professionnel pour être promu. Cependant la femme se sent de plus en plus mal à l'aise d'être utilisé par le gendarme comme un leurre contre son mari et par les passeurs, contre son mari, cependant, pour distraire le gendarme. Elle mobilise donc ses sentiments féminins contre les deux et les incite à régler au couteau. Le mari trouve la mort, le gendarme est arrêté.

The film is based on the somewhat whimsical and somewhat comical relationship between a fairly unlikely couple involved in a complex and emotionally tortured cohabitation. The real scandal of the film begins when Marie decides to leave Bruce.
