Ace Jackson (Sean Weathers) is a low level criminal who has dreams of making it big. Through his cousin, Baxter (Waliek Crandall), a local drug king pin, Mr. Bigelow aka Mr. Biggs (Adonis Williams), lets Ace unload a shipment of cocaine under the condition that he gets his money or drugs back by the end of the week, however things go horribly awry when the drugs are stolen and now Ace has to try and beat the clock before he gets killed by Bigelow's goons. The film has a very unique look and structure to it, the actors were aloud to improvise most of their dialogue to give the film a natural feel, it was shot in high-contrast black and white along with added graininess to match the gritty, dark, dirty world and the characters in it. There are also still images of murder victims spliced throughout the film to add to the impending sense of doom and inevitability for Ace. The most blunt message in the film however is the scrolling text that appears several times making statements of social and political injustices, comparing the macro and micro and turning Ace’s journey into an allegorical tale of someone on the bottom of the food chain trying in vain to make it to the top.

Francesco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett) is the cemetery caretaker in the small Italian town of Buffalora. He lives in a ramshackle house on the premises, constantly surrounded by death, with only his mentally handicapped assistant Gnaghi (François Hadji-Lazaro) for company. Young punks in town spread gossip that Dellamorte is impotent. His hobbies are reading outdated telephone directories, in which he crosses out the names of the deceased, and trying to assemble a puzzle shaped like a human skull. Gnaghi, whose interests include spaghetti and television, can speak only one word: "Gna.

Juan (Alexis Díaz de Villegas) is forty years old and has devoted the majority of his life to living in Cuba doing absolutely nothing. He is accompanied by his bumbling sidekick, Lazaro (Jorge Molina), who is just as lazy but the bigger fool (and accident-prone), on a makeshift fishing raft. Their line snags what they think is a corpse but it suddenly awakens and attacks them, ending with Lazaro shooting it in the head with his spear gun. They think nothing of it at first and go about their business as usual, which involves thuggish activity and associating with their less than reputable friends: Lazaro's vain, Americanized pretty-boy son Vladi California; drag queen La China, who is also an expert slingshot marksman; and China's black, hulk-like lover Primo (who faints at the sight of blood and has to wear a blindfold when fighting).

This movie opens with a news montage explaining that it is set in a dystopic near-future in which George W. Bush has been elected to a fourth term. Four vampires - Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr - share a flat in the Wellington suburb of Te Aro. Although Viago, Vladislav, and Deacon are all several centuries old, they have retained normal human appearances, but the 8,000-year-old Petyr resembles Count Orlok and acts more savagely than the younger vampires. Each night, Viago, Vladislav, and Deacon prowl the streets of Wellington searching for people to kill, but they must stay in the flat during the day to avoid sunlight—which is lethal to vampires—therefore they have not adapted to 21st-century life. Deacon has a human servant (familiar)—Jackie—who runs errands for the vampires, but she is frustrated that Deacon will not turn her into a vampire. Jackie leads her ex-boyfriend Nick to the vampire's flat so they can drink his blood: he escapes before they can kill him, but as he leaves the flat, Petyr attacks him and later turns Nick into a vampire.
