Set in 2010 post-communist Romania, the title character and her husband are visited by their daughter who has been living in the USA for the last 10 years. This prompts her to reflect on the changes that have taken place during Romania since the fall of Communism. The film is cut with flashbacks to her halcyon communist days whilst she tries to fix her daughters' money problems.

En Roumanie, après la libération, une équipe de reporters TV cherche en pleine campagne des personnes ayant vécu une histoire suffisamment extraordinaire pour que cela puisse constituer un sujet de reportage. Guidés par un maire local qui ironise sur les critères d'attribution des aides européennes, ils aperçoivent une vieille femme habillée tout en noir, qui erre à l'intérieur d'une sinistre friche industrielle. Le maire explique qu'il y avait ici jadis un joli village, mais qu'il fut totalement rasé par les forces répressives du régime communiste pour laisser place à cette usine, aujourd'hui abandonnée et en ruine.

The film follows the story of Otilia Mihartescu (Anamaria Marinca) and Gabriela "Găbița" Dragut (Laura Vasiliu), two university friends in an unnamed Romanian town. The film is set in 1987, one of the last years of the Ceaușescu regime. When Găbița becomes pregnant, the two girls arrange a meeting with Mr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov) in a hotel, where he is to perform an illegal abortion (Communist Romania had a natalist policy against abortion).

Dante Remus Lăzărescu (Ioan Fiscuteanu), a cranky retired engineer, lives alone as a widower with his three cats in a Bucharest apartment. In the grip of extreme pain, Lăzărescu calls for an ambulance, but when none arrives, he asks for his neighbors' help. In the 19th century, a young boy named Charles watches as his family is slaughtered by a werewolf. Before dying, Charles' mother gives him a silver amulet of a howling wolf head, which belonged to his grandfather, who was a Great Hunter of werewolves. Infected individuals are typically shot in the head, after which their bodies are burned. Werewolves are usually only able to transform during the full moon. Charles and company receive an offer to hunt down a particularly vicious werewolf of a new breed. This new type of werewolf is able to transform three nights in a row.
