Illusions du bonheur ou Baas Gansendonck est un film belge de 1945, réalisé par Gaston Ariën.

Synopsis

Le scénario est basé sur le roman néerlandais Baes Gansendonck (de 1850) de l'écrivain flamand Hendrik Conscience. La première adaptation cinématographique de ce roman est un film muet de 1929 : Baas Ganzendonck de Germain Baert. Le roman décrit l'histoire d'un riche aubergiste de la Campine qui périt par son propre orgueil et arrogance.

Following World War II, the widow Antonia and her daughter Danielle arrive at Antonia's home town where her mother is dying. Antonia turns down an offer of marriage from Farmer Bas, but develops a romance with him anyway. Antonia and Danielle visit the city to find a man to impregnate Danielle, resulting in the birth of Therèse, an unusually intelligent girl. Danielle also develops a lesbian relationship with Therèse's tutor.

Pauline (van der Groen) is a 'little girl of 66 years old'. She is mentally retarded and been cared after by her sister Martha. When Martha dies, her two younger sisters, Paulette (Petersen) and Cecile have to make a decision on the best place for Pauline to be looked after. Neither of them is ready to take care of her. Paulette has a shop to look after and Cecile has her Albert. But according to Martha's last will, her fortune will only be divided in three equal parts if one of the sisters looks after Pauline. If they decide to take her to an institution, Pauline will be the only heir.
