Le film est une adaptation du roman Indian Horse de Richard Wagamese . L'histoire est centrée sur Saul, un jeune Canadien des Premières Nations qui survit au pensionnat indien et devient une étoile hockey sur glace. Saul est représenté à différents âges par les acteurs Sladen Peltier (à 6 ans), Forrest Goodluck (à 15 ans) et Ajuawak Kapashesit (à 22 ans).
Le film a été principalement tourné à Sudbury et à Peterborough, en Ontario.
Synopsis
Saul Cheval indien est élevé par sa grand-mère sur les terres ancestrales. Quand sa grand-mère meurt, Saul est découvert par les autorités et placé de force dans un pensionnat destiné aux autochtones et à qui on interdit l'utilisation de leur langue ojibwe.Actors

At 17, William Lanctôt-Couture (played by Dhanaé Audet-Beaulieu), an ice hockey star player passes through rough times and a depression prior to Christmas. He is unmotivated and lacks purpose and his coach criticizes him for his lack of team spirit. Meanwhile the troubled player's father Benoît (Christian Bégin) is preoccupied with completing a documentary film about the Montreal Canadiens to the detriment of his family obligations and to the detriment of his player son. His mother Michelle (Céline Bonnier), a nurse, is deeply affected by one of her young patients, Daniel Delage (Antoine L'Écuyer) who at just 10 is awaiting a kidney transplant. William befriends Daniel, a huge ice hockey and Canadiens fan and most of the team is showing up at the hospital to meet Daniel.

À la suite d'un grave accident d'autobus qui a décimé l'équipe après un match pré-saison à Roberval, le National de Québec doit se reconstruire. Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is a successful Minneapolis defense attorney of the Ducksworth, Saver & Gross firm, who never loses a case but whose truculent courtroom antics have earned him no respect among his peers. After successfully defending a client resulting in his 30th win, Bombay is called into his boss's office to be congratulated, but also chastised for embarrassing the judge. Regardless, he celebrates by going out drinking and is subsequently arrested for drunken driving. Bombay is sentenced to community service by coaching the local "District 5" PeeWee hockey team. Bombay has a history with the sport, although his memories are far from pleasant: Years ago, Bombay was the star player on the Hawks, but he missed a penalty shot in the championship game, costing his team the title for the first time and disappointing his hyper-competitive coach, Jack Reilly (Lane Smith).
