Le film est une adaptation du roman Indian Horse de Richard Wagamese . L'histoire est centrée sur Saul, un jeune Canadien des Premières Nations qui survit au pensionnat indien et devient une étoile hockey sur glace. Saul est représenté à différents âges par les acteurs Sladen Peltier (à 6 ans), Forrest Goodluck (à 15 ans) et Ajuawak Kapashesit (à 22 ans).
Le film a été principalement tourné à Sudbury et à Peterborough, en Ontario.
Synopsis
Saul Cheval indien est élevé par sa grand-mère sur les terres ancestrales. Quand sa grand-mère meurt, Saul est découvert par les autorités et placé de force dans un pensionnat destiné aux autochtones et à qui on interdit l'utilisation de leur langue ojibwe.Actors

À la mort de sa mère, Janeau déménage avec son père à St-Hilaire. L'une de ses voisines, Julie, la gardienne de but pour l'équipe de hockey des Lynx, convainc Janeau de rejoindre la même équipe lorsqu'elle voit tout le potentiel de ce garçon pour le sport. Malheureusement pour le nouveau joueur, ce n'est pas tout le monde qui voit son arrivée d'un bon œil(comme joey). Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott), a bouncer at a bar in Massachusetts, feels ostracized from his adoptive Jewish family, because his father, Dr. Glatt (Eugene Levy) and brother are both successful physicians. Doug attends a minor league hockey game with his best friend Pat (Jay Baruchel). Pat taunts the visiting team during a fight and one of their players climbs into the stands, calling him a homosexual slur. The film opens as the Ducks are being awarded junior varsity hockey scholarships to Eden Hall Academy, a prestigious prep school that coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) attended. Bombay announces that he will be leaving his position as coach to take a job with the Junior Goodwill Games, much to Charlie's dismay. Bombay's spot is filled by former Minnesota North Stars player Ted Orion (Jeffrey Nordling). Initially the Ducks clash with Orion's disciplinary coaching tactics and his focus on defense over scoring. Orion abandons several Duck traditions and strips Charlie Conway (Joshua Jackson) of his Captain's 'C', stating that the tricks and tactics the team used in the Pee Wee league won't work at this level. He is proven right when, in their first game of the season, the Ducks take an embarrassing tie after losing a 9-goal lead. Orion is livid, but makes a valid point (about hockey and life) when he states that the Ducks won't be able to dominate every game and have to learn how to play "two-way hockey," not choking when the game isn't going their way. Charlie's only consolation is meeting Linda (Margot Finley), a young student petitioning to change the school's team name (The Warriors) as it perpetuates an offensive Native American stereotype. Though she initially writes him off as a mindless jock, the two start to hit it off.

A talented young teenage figure skater named Katelin Kingsford dreams of being a champion. During one of her competitions, she is discovered by a famous Russian skating coach, Natasha Goberman. However, Natasha coaches at an expensive boarding school and Katelin's parents cannot afford to send her there. However, Natasha convinces the girls hockey team coach to give the last hockey scholarship to Katelin so she can train with Natasha. Katelin is overjoyed and excited to be taught by Natasha but quickly learns that juggling hockey practice, skate club practice, and her homework is much harder than she imagined. A student assistant coach for the hockey team named Spencer constantly ridicules her, and her fellow skaters in the figure skating club are just as rude. Katelin is also forced to hide all of her precious figure skating related belongings, as the hockey coach warns her that the girls on the hockey team despise "twirl girls". However, Katelin does find some solace in her roommate, Hollywood Henderson, a fellow hockey player. She finds out that Katelin is a figure skater, but promises not to tell anyone.

Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is a successful Minneapolis defense attorney of the Ducksworth, Saver & Gross firm, who never loses a case but whose truculent courtroom antics have earned him no respect among his peers. After successfully defending a client resulting in his 30th win, Bombay is called into his boss's office to be congratulated, but also chastised for embarrassing the judge. Regardless, he celebrates by going out drinking and is subsequently arrested for drunken driving. Bombay is sentenced to community service by coaching the local "District 5" PeeWee hockey team. Bombay has a history with the sport, although his memories are far from pleasant: Years ago, Bombay was the star player on the Hawks, but he missed a penalty shot in the championship game, costing his team the title for the first time and disappointing his hyper-competitive coach, Jack Reilly (Lane Smith).

À la suite d'un grave accident d'autobus qui a décimé l'équipe après un match pré-saison à Roberval, le National de Québec doit se reconstruire. Recevant peu d'appui de la Ligue Nationale, l'entraîneur et directeur-gérant Marc Gagnon essaie de motiver ses joueurs en nommant le jeune prodige Guy Lambert capitaine. Mais les joueurs n'ont plus de motivation et l'équipe perd dix-neuf matchs d'affilée. Alors que tout semble perdu, le National doit se tourner vers son ancien héros Pierre Lambert afin de retrouver le chemin de la victoire. Suzie Lambert, elle, a pris sous son aile un groupe de travailleuses qui souhaite sauver l'usine où elles travaillent.
