Synopsis
A happily married couple, Ellie (Kirstie Alley) and Nick Denato (Lee Horsley) are living in the wildlife of Africa with their young daughter Melissa (Lindsay Parker). Even though they have everything that they had ever wanted there, they return to San Francisco so Nick can focus on his career as a photographer and she can give birth to their second child. Soon, life goes on a downward spiral for the high-powered, two-career couple, as Ellie is not satisfied in their surroundings. She misses her life as a doctor in Africa and suspects that Nick is not faithful to her when Scott's young and attractive assistant Robin (Courtney Thorne-Smith) arrives. When his partner Scott (Robert Englund) convinces Nick to go on a business trip to Nepal for six weeks, she reluctantly accepts the situation.Actors

The film opens with a mysterious person chasing a student, Martha Sayers (Terry Lumley). The same day, the police and her sister Elizabeth (Pamela Franklin) find her hanged in her room. The movie revolves around real-life Lithuanian seaman Simas Kudirka, a radio operator on a Soviet fish processing vessel. When his ship meets at sea with a U.S. Coast Guard cutter near Martha's Vineyard in early 1970, Kudirka makes a dramatic leap from the deck, landing on the USCGC Vigilant. He announces that he wishes to defect, but confusion over U.S. policy on defections prevents the Americans from offering him asylum. As the crew of the Vigilant looks on helplessly, Soviet officers are allowed to board the cutter, beat and bind Kudirka, and drag him back to his own ship. This tinderbox political incident occurs during a Soviet/U.S. conference over fishing rights. The ultimate fate of Simas Kudirka provides the core of the script.
