Jugnu (English: firefly) is a 1973 Indian Hindi movie produced and directed by Pramod Chakravorty. The story is about an extremely intelligent crook with a "Golden" heart (Dharmendra) who has the remarkable ability to steal from the most protected setups. The movie also stars Hema Malini, Lalita Pawar, Mehmood, Prem Chopra, Nazir Hussain, Ajit and Pran.The music is by S. D. Burman and the lyrics by Anand Bakshi. . It went on to become a box-office "Superhit" becoming the second highest grossing film of 1973. It had great songs, most notably the Diwali song picturised beautifully on Dharmendra and sung by Kishore Kumar, "Deep Diwali ke Jhute". The song became a runaway hit going on to become an all-time a chart-buster of its time. Another notable feature of the film is the popular dialogue written by Sachin Bhowmick, "Baap ke naam kaa sahara kaamzor log lete hai", Meaning: "Only the weak seek to be known by their father's reputation" which was said on two occasions by Dharmendra and Pran. It went on to become one of the most loved and famous dialogues of all-time in Hindi cinema. Jugnu Remains a cult classic of Hindi cinema and represents one of Dharmendra's finest performances.

This is the story of an eccentric young man, Ashok (Dharmendra) who believes in doing good without worrying about the consequences. This does not find any favor with his sister-in-law Sarla (Sulochana), and she decides to leave him. But he persuades her to come back, and he decides to relocate and not cause any more trouble for Sarla. On his way he has a skirmish with the a princess Rajkumari Seema (Hema Malini) who he teaches a lesson to respect the poor and food grown in the fields. When he arrives in the city, due to his misfortune, he lands a job at a factory run by the Rajkumari, and immediately gets in to the bad books of Prem (Prem Chopra) to whom the Rajkumari is engaged to be married. The Rajkumari also decides to teach him a lesson for the humiliation she suffered at his hands. But things work out differently, and Ashok ends up saving the life of the Rajkumari, and she falls in love with him. This jeopardizes the plans that Rajkumari's uncle (Ajit) has for her and her bethrothed Prem, and a horrifying scheme is concocted to stop the love and possible future relationship of Rajkumari and Ashok.

Shankar's (Amitabh Bachchan) father, who is a village temple priest is murdered by Tiger (Amjad Khan). His mother and sister are torched in their house. After his father, mother and sister are killed, Shankar decides to bring justice by himself and goes to the palace of Tiger. Instead of killing Tiger, Shankar blinds him. Shankar blames God for doing nothing and grows up as a Nastik (atheist). Shankar flees to the city and becomes a thief. He joins forces with Balbir (Pran) and Gauri (Hema Malini). At one time, he is shot by Tiger for stealing his goods. In an attempt to hide, he finds his mother, who he thought was dead in the fire. In a rude awakening, he decides to stop stealing and join with his long lost family. Incidentally, Balbir saves Shankar's sister Shanti (Rita Bhaduri), who is chased by Tiger's men when she goes outside to bring medicine for her mother. Shankar reunites with his long lost mother and sister. Shankar finds out from his sister that the enemy who he thought had killed, is actually alive. He decides to finish him off once and for all.

There is a village named Haridaspur where, Ashok Sharma (Rajesh Khanna) has been posted as an Inspector in charge. When he arrives in the remote village, he comes to the rescue of a blind man and a widow, and has a fist fight with Nishikant Shah and his men. The immediate next day, Shah finds out that the person with whom his men fought with was Ashok itself. Then to make friendship with Ashok, he goes to pay homage, but Ashok refuses. After string of incidences Ashok comes to know of all the bad activities carried out by Nishikant Shah and MLA Gopal Choudary (Om Shivpuri). Ashok then realises he has to help the people of the village from getting exploited from these rich men. Meanwhile he starts to live in the village as a paying guest at the house of a girl Asha(Shabana Sidique) and also gets fond of an orphan child from the village named Chotu. Ashok then learns that Chotu's father was a loyal farmer who was duped and was killed by Nishikant's men. He even promises Chotu of bringing the culprits to book. Somehow then Shah and his friend Choudhry manage to put Ashok in trouble by fixing a blame on him of killing a man in his custody. Due to this he then faces a situation where he could lose his job and his good reputation too.

On the lookout for employment, Ashok (Joy Mukherjee) sees the photographs of beautiful Asha (Asha Parekh), and decides to accept employment as the estate's Manager. His expectations are short-lived as Asha turns out to be a rich, spoiled, conceited bratty young lady. To complicate matters further, Seema (Nazima), Asha's sister is attracted to Ashok. Ashok and Asha do like and eventually end up in love with each other, but Ashok's dad (Ulhas) does not approve to their marriage as he knows of Asha's parentage, a father who is an escaped convict, in jail for murder, and a mother whose profession was: prostitution. Ashok himself sees Asha in her true colors when she sings and dances at a party, overly intoxicated.
