After murdering a rich man named Sohanlal and covering it up as a car accident, a man named Khanna, who ordered the hit, is murdered as well, by someone he is shocked to see. Chandrashekhar (Shammi Kapoor), or Shekhar as he is called now, belongs to an aristocratic family, who believe laughter is a sign of belonging to the lower class, and as a result laughter is not encouraged in the household, run by Shekhar's domineering mother (Lalita Pawar). In this household the only one who dares to laugh and enjoy life is Shekhar's sister Mala (Shashikala), who also dares to love Jeevan (Anoop Kumar). Things change when their mother finds out about Mala's indiscretions, and asks Shekhar to take her away from their home, to distant and scenic Kashmir, for a while. She instructs Shekhar to get married to a girl from a princely family. When Shekhar and Mala go to Kashmir, they meet with beautiful Rajkumari (Saira Banu). And after being stranded with her for a few nights during a snowstorm, he realizes what he has been missing, and becomes a care-free man in love. This change is welcomed by Mala, but not by their mother. To make matters worse, Rajkumari does not belong to a princely family, and Shekhar knows that his mother will never approve of his marrying her.

Asha (Mala Sinha) is in court facing a murder trial. Puran (Bharat Bhushan), a lawyer and journalist, takes the case. The story then goes into flashback, showing Asha working in the rationing office just after the war. She comes from a poor family and is the sole earning member. She also has six younger sisters to take care of. Puran comes from a rich family; his father is Seth Mulchand, a business man. However, Puran decides to work for a newspaper, as a reporter. Asha likes Puran's articles exposing corruption and black-marketing, and his articles on working women. She gets interested in meeting the writer. The two meet in her office at her place of work. While leaving, Puran manages to drop his papers, and they get jumbled up with the papers on Asha's desk. Her paycheck, which was lying on the desk, is picked up by Puran by mistake along with his own papers. She meets Puran again to get her check back.

Geeta (Nalini Jaywant) and Kishan (Chandan Kumar) are a happily married couple and expecting their first child. Kishan works with a contractor Thomas driving a truck to work. One day he meets with an accident and dies. The grief makes Geeta lose her baby. Geeta is inconsolable and her brother Sewakram (Radha Kishan) tries his best to help her mourn and deal with her sorrow. He finds an abandoned infant and brings him to Geeta hoping that by caring for him her maternal instincts will ease the pain. It’s 1947 and communal riots have spread all over the city. Advocate Iqbal Hussain (Rajendra Kumar) and his wife Razia (Nanda), leave India for the newly formed Pakistan, but due to unforeseen circumstances their infant boy is left behind. After five years spent in anguish over their missing son, Razia and Iqbal come back to India to look for their son. Eventually they trace him to Geeta. The boy and mother refuse to be parted but it is imposed on Geeta to give up the boy. Razia is unable to see the misery the parting is causing her son and Geeta. She makes the final sacrifice and returns with her husband to Pakistan having left the boy behind in India with Geeta.
