Synopsis
Tobey Mitchell, un jeune vendeur de ballons parisien, garde jalousement son stand dans la rue. Un jour, le Jean's Dog Circus prend sa place et Tobey est vaincu par l'indignation féroce de Mimi, la danseuse du spectacle. Le grand-père de Mimi, Michael, a économisé pour qu'elle puisse étudier avec le grand Dulac. Lorsqu'il est cambriolé, Michael est tué à la suite d'une chute dans un escalier. Bien qu'il affecte l'indifférence, Tobey s'occupe de Mimi en deuil. Mais il est en colère quand elle lui donne des idées pour le concours de beauté qu'il veut organiser. Néanmoins, il finance les leçons de danse de Mimi, de sorte qu'il n'a plus d'argent pour le concours. Fifi, une artiste de rue qui a volé Michael, propose de financer Tobey, mais celui-ci refuse. Mimi, apprenant qu'il a payé pour ses leçons, abandonne un engagement de danse. Pendant ce temps Tobey accepte le plan de Fifi mais essaie de retirer son spectacle quand il apprend sa perfidie. As described in a film magazine, Eileen Rodney (Dalton) is in love with Raymoond Moreland (Connklin), a lecturer who favors the mating of souls without the usual ceremony. When she learns his true convictions she is disgusted and accepts the proposal of her guardian, John Harland (Hall). After she is married, Eileen meets Moreland and requests the return of her love letters, and he invites her to his home. When she gets there he forces his attentions on her. In self defense she strikes him and, believing him dead, rushes from the home. The guilt of her action weighs on her life. Later, a half crazed gardener confesses to the crime and, with the knowledge that she is blameless, Eileen confesses everything to her husband.

When several women are murdered and their forefingers severed, Holmes and Watson are called into action, but Holmes is baffled by the crimes at the start. Widower Sir George Fenwick (Paul Cavanagh), after a romantic night alone with his girlfriend Lydia Marlowe (Hillary Brooke), is hypnotized into believing that he is responsible for the crimes. He is certain that he is guilty after he awakes from a stupor and finds a woman's forefinger in his pocket. His daughter comes to Holmes and Watson without realizing that Moriarty's henchman is following her. She tells Holmes and Watson that she found her father burying a forefinger under a pile of soil. She has dug up the forefinger and shows it to them.
