En 1942, pendant l'occupation de la Grèce par les puissances de l'Axe, Thanassis (Thanássis Véngos) et sa sœur Frosso (Katerína Gógou) vivent à Athènes dans le même appartement et survivent tant bien que mal. Thanassis travaille dans une entreprise grecque au service des occupants allemands et italiens. Ce travail permet à Thanassis et Frosso d'échapper en partie à la famine organisée par les nazis : il ramène le soir dans sa gamelle, une partie de la nourriture distribuée par les Allemands aux ouvriers. Frosso, quant à elle, est membre de la résistance grecque.

The film is divided into four parts, which Godard has subsequently given by name. In the first part, "Theater," Vicky Vitalis, an elderly film director, is casting a new project called "Fatal Bolero," assisted by his nephew, Jérôme. A group of hopeful actors lines up to audition, but Vicky is dissatisfied with each of their line readings. The director nevertheless manages to secure funding from a man called Baron Felix, who himself secures one of the actresses named Sabine, to the chagrin of Sabine's plaintive boyfriend. Later, Jérôme accompanies Vicky's daughter, Camille, a professor of philosophy, as she searches for a copy of The Game of Love and Chance, the play by Pierre de Marivaux. Her intention is to stage the play in war torn Sarajevo. However, unable to find a copy, she settles instead on the Alfred de Musset play One Must Not Trifle with Love, happily noting that she shares the same name as the play's heroine. Jérôme, smitten with his cousin, decides to go to Sarajevo with her, to his mother Sylvie's dismay. Sylvie persuades her brother Vicky to accompany them, and the family's maid, Jamila, also decides to go. Camille and Jérôme decide to cast Jamila in the play as the character Rosette.

The film opens with Sir John Falstaff and Justice Shallow walking through the snow, then to a warm fire inside the Boar's Head Tavern as the two reminisce. After a main credit sequence, the narrator explains that King Henry IV of England has succeeded Richard II, whom he had killed. Richard II's true heir, Edmund Mortimer, is a prisoner in Wales, and Mortimer's cousins Northumberland, Worcester and Northumberland's son Hotspur demand that Henry rescue Mortimer. Henry refuses and Northumberland, Worcester and Hotspur begin to plot his overthrow.

(ref: chaîne Histoire) Juin 1940 - Dans un stalag en France, se trouve réunie une équipe de prisonniers particulièrement pittoresques : Caruso, l'électricien, Emile, Ballochet, Pater et ... le Caporal. Dès les premiers jours de sa captivité, le Caporal manifeste déjà un trait essentiel de son caractère. C'est un maniaque de l'évasion. Une première tentative, à laquelle participe à ses côtés Ballochet et Pater, ne parvient même pas à dépasser le mur d'enceinte du camp. Ce premier échec ne décourage pas le Caporal et Pater qui referont un essai – toujours manqué…- dans le wagon qui les emporte vers l'Allemagne. Et les tentatives continuent ! Un essai de fuite de la fabrique de briques où ils travaillent se termine, pour Pater et le Caporal, aux pieds d'une sentinelle… Décidés d'opérer de façon plus « scientifique », les deux amis se préparent des costumes de ville, en teignant en noir des uniformes. L’opposition d'un adjudant les oblige à retarder leur projet et c’est avec Penche à gauche que le Caporal prend la fuite. Cette fois, ils parviennent à prendre le train, aidés par une voyageuse qui n’est autre qu’un prisonnier français déguisé. Cette évasion mènera le Caporal un peu plus loin que les précédentes… à la gare suivante, où il se fera encore arrêter. Après un séjour dans un camp disciplinaire, le Caporal persiste dans ses intentions et grâce à Erika, une jeune allemande, il parvient à se procurer des vêtements civils pour Pater et pour lui. Dans le train qui roule vers la France, l'espoir des deux évadés grandit d'instant en instant. Un bombardement providentiel les sauvera d'un mauvais pas. Les voici à la frontière, la France est en vue…

The film opens in the ballroom of the Cary plantation on Virgie’s sixth birthday. Her slave Uncle Billy dances for her party guests, but the celebration is brought abruptly to an end when a messenger arrives with news of the assault on Fort Sumter and a declaration of war.
