Karodpati also called Millionaire is a Hindi/Urdu 1936 comedy film directed by Hemchander Chunder. The film was produced by New Theatres Ltd. Calcutta, and the music was composed by R. C. Boral with the assistance of Pankaj Mullick. The lyrics were written by Kidar Sharma who also acted in the film. The film starred K. L. Saigal, Sardar Akhtar, Molina Devi, Pahari Sanyal, Nawab, Trilok Kapoor, Rajkumari, and Kidar Sharma. The film showcased K. L. Saigal performing a farcical-comedy role which was a different format from his normal tragedy based stories. The story revolves around a cinema-crazy young man who wins a lottery, leading to a series of comedic situations when his friends join him.

Synopsis

K. L. Saigal plays a cinema crazy young man obsessed with the allure of motion pictures. On winning the lottery he decides to enter the film world. The functioning of the film-world is shown with humorous elements in everyday situations. He is joined by his friends leading to funny incidents.

Prince Ezra (Nawab) is a Jewish merchant persecuted by the Romans, especially the Roman Priest Brutus. Ezra lives with his seven-year-old son Yameen. One day while playing with his catapult, Yameen manages to unintentionally hit the Priest Brutus as he’s walking past. The boy is taken prisoner and no imploring can change Brutus’ punishment. He has the boy thrown to the animals. Elias, Ezra’s devoted slave kidnaps Brutus’ young daughter Decia and brings her to a grief-stricken Ezra for revenge. Unable to harm her and missing Yameen, Ezra brings Decia up as his daughter and names her Hannah.

Mansoor (K. L. Saigal) is a dacoit who falls in love with Husn Pari (Husn Banu), the sister of the evil caliph. Pervez K. L. Saigal, heir to the throne of Kascand flees from his kingdom when he finds that his mother (Shyama Zutshi) along with the Wazir (Gul Hamid), has arranged his marriage with the princess (Rajkumari) of Bijapore. Tikkim, wants to marry the princess and he has her kidnapped by the qypsies. Pervez during his escape meets some qypsies who have the kidnapped princess with them. He joins the gypsies and travels with them as a commoner. Zarina (Rattan Bai) one of the gypsy girl falls in love with Pervez. Pervez and the princess find out the truth about each other and fall in love. Together, they defeat the villain Tikkim.

Chandidas (K. L. Saigal), a lover of truth and humanity is the disciple of Acharya (M. Ansari), a priest in the temple. Baiju (Pahari Sanyal), a washer-man lives with his wife and sister Rami (Uma Sashi) in the village where the Zamindar (landowner) Gopinath (Nawab) though outwardly religious and respecting the Brahmins is an evil man. Gopinath has a henchman Sarju (H. Siddiqui) who carries out his dirty work. Rami sweeps the compound of the temple where Chandidas sees her while he carries on his duties in the temple. They fall in love which causes resentment in Gopichand who has been eyeing Rami, but when she spurns his advances he has her kidnapped. His wife comes to the rescue of Rami and helps her escape. The Zamindar goons go after her and assault her. Gopichand convinces the priest that Chandidas should be punished and made to repent for associating with a lower caste woman. Chandidas agrees to this but then sees Rami’s injuries and realises the duplicity of the so-called pious men. He renounces his life in the village and leaves it accompanied by Baiju, his wife and Rami.
