Kathleen Mavourneen is a 1930 sound/talking film directed by Albert Ray, stars Sally O'Neil and produced and distributed by Tiffany Pictures, and is the first talking film version of the oft-filmed Dion Boucicault play.

The last version prior to this film was a 1919 Fox film starring Theda Bara. Sally O'Neil would star in the 1937 all-Irish version of the story, thereby filming the story twice.

Synopsis

Kathleen, une jeune Irlandaise, arrive à New York pour se marier avec Terry, un plombier. Lors d'une soirée chez sa tante Nora, elle rencontre Dan Moriarity, un politicien qu'elle considère comme un gentleman. Il l'invite chez lui à Long Island, ce qui provoque la jalousie de Terry. Moriarity propose à Kathleen le mariage et informe Terry de ce fait. Toutefois, lors du mariage, un homme accuse les hommes de Moriarity de meurtre. Moriarity lui tire dans le dos devant Kathleen et dit à majordome de disposer du corps. Terrifiée, prenant juste le temps de rendre son alliance, Kathleen se rue hors de la pièce et se console dans les bras de Terry.

Lord Woodstock perd de l'argent en finançant une revue avec en vedette la danseuse Olive Carteret. Cette dernière conspire alors avec Phillips, un parieur, pour droguer Lee, mais Woodstock prend sa place sur le ring et gagne le combat. Lee découvre qu'Olive et Phillips complotent de kidnapper Norah et ainsi forcer Woodstock à ne pas faire courir Lady Luck dans le Derby. Il tue Olive mais arrive trop tard pour empêcher Phillips d'enlever Norah. Lee et Woodstock sont mis en prison alors qu'ils essayent de sauver Norah. Lee est tué, mais Woodstock s'échappe, Lady Luck gagne la course, Phillips est arrêté pour meurtre, Norah et Woodstock sont libres et peuvent se marier.

Little Joe, a man killed over gambling debts, is restored to life by angelic powers and given six months to redeem his soul and become worthy of entering Heaven—otherwise he will be condemned to Hell. Lucifer arranges for Joe to become wealthy by winning a lottery, reintroduces Joe to beautiful gold-digger Georgia Brown, and manipulates marital discord between Joe and Petunia. Little Joe abandons his wife for Georgia, and the two embark on a life of hedonistic pleasure. As Little Joe and Georgia celebrate at a nightclub one evening, Petunia joins them, determined to win Joe back. Little Joe fights with Domino for Petunia and she prays for God to destroy the nightclub. A cyclone appears and leaves the nightclub in ruins, as Joe and Petunia lie dead in the ruins after being shot by Domino. Just as it appears that Joe's soul is lost forever, the angelic General informs him that Georgia was so affected by the tragedy that she has donated all the money that he had given her to the church. On this technicality, Little Joe is allowed to go to Heaven with Petunia. As the two climb the Celestial Stairs, Joe suddenly wakes in his own bed. He had not been killed in the initial gambling-debt fracas—he had only received a concussion, and all his supposed dealings with angels and demons were only a fever dream. Now genuinely reformed, Little Joe begins a new, happy life with his loving Petunia.
