Synopsis

Kozhi Koovuthu starts off with our hero Kumaresan (Ashok) and his gang of friends, going around villages, selling chicken. They con the simple villagers into believing the common chicken they sell, to be imported breeds. The whole group is happy-go-lucky, and don't worry much about the future. Thulasi (Shija Rose), who is living at her aunt's house after moving away from her father, buys 2 chicks from Kumaresan. When they end up dead the next day, she corners him and demands an explanation. Kumaresan gives 2 more chicks as replacement, and later, when a group of villagers tie up Kumaresan and beat him for cheating them by selling them sick chicken, Thulasi saves him from the group. On learning of Kumaresan's family, and the hardships he has faced, she develops a soft corner for him. In due course, this turns to love. Just as everything is progressing smoothly, Thulasi's ruffian uncle whisks her off to her native village for a festival.

How betraying a friend or an acquaintance can ruin one's life is poignantly depicted in the Malayalam film Thalappavu made by actor-turned-director Madhupal. The movie is based on a real-life confession of a police constable (P. Ramachandran Nair) about gunning down a Naxalite (Arikkad Varghese) in a fake encounter as per the order of his superiors in 1970. The screenplay by Babu Janardhanan uses the stream of consciousness flow to show the mental state of the constable who feels deranged after the incident. Lal plays constable Raveendran Pillai whose family life is ruined after the killing of Joseph (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a revolutionary leader fighting for the rights of the hapless farmers of Wayanad. Raveendran Pillai is a misfit in the police force as he is not courageous or cruel as the others of his ilk. He is a family man to the hilt and dotes on his children. He befriends Joseph on the way while on duty. Joseph introduces him to the revolutionary ideas. Raveendran Pillai takes instant liking for Joseph and roams in the forests with Joseph during his free time.

The film begins with an accident. Gautham (Nani) is abducted by John Abraham (Ashish Vidyarthi). On the way Gautham is forced to narrate his tale as Gautham talks of stopping a marriage and John too talks of preventing a wedding. Hence, the flashback. Gautham is ready to propose to Simran (Kriti Kharbanda) with a bunch of red roses. But destiny has other plans. Elsewhere, Nithya (Nitya Menen) is playing cricket and hits Gautham with her shot. He is then taken to the hospital in the stretcher. Simran falls in love with the doctor treating Gautham and they get married eventually. He realises he's in love with her. But before he could tell her, he gets to know that she is already engaged. Gautham steps back and stays secluded. Nithya and her fiance end their engagement over an argument about Gautham. Unaware of this and having moved on, Gautham starts dating a veterinary doctor, Kavya, but they break up after an altercation. Now Nithya who realizes that she loves Gautam, goes to Gautam's house after his mother dies, to propose him but shocks to see Kavya and Gautam's house. Thinking that they both are married, she leaves to Bangalore and accepts the marriag proposal her parents set for her. After realizing Nithya misunderstood him, Gautham and his friends leave for Bangalore to stop the marriage. In the way to Bangalore, their car stops and Gautam asks for lift and they accept and that is where he was kidnapped. After a big fight between Gautam and the kidnapper, it is revealed that the kidnapper was looking for one who gave Gautam lift not Gautam. The kidnapper helps Gautham to reach the wedding. Gautam's friends reveal the truth to Nithya. Nithya in order to meet Gautham escapes from the wedding and ends up asking the kidnapper lift. After a whole confusion, Nithya unites with Gautham.
