Synopsis
The movie is about Ilangovan aka Ilango (Parthiban), a middle-class youth, who dreams to get his sister Kavitha (Mallika married to a millionaire. He is very keen on becoming rich and falls in love with Roopa (Lakshmi Rai), daughter of a rich industrialist. Now and then Ilango comes across Chellappa (Vadivelu), a petty thief, and takes him for a fun ride. A sequence of events makes Ilango realize that money is not everything in life. He finally, along with Chellappa, takes efforts to get his sister married to the boy whom she loves.Actors

The story revolves around Bharathi (R. Parthiepan), a worker for a rich Vellaisamy Thevar Zamindar (Vijayakumar). He comes from a lower caste and falls in love with the rich Zamindar's daughter Kannamma (Meena). Kannamma feels the same way, however their differing castes become a barrier, and as Kannamma's marriage is fixed to a wealthy man, Bharathi doesn't have the courage to express his disapproval or start a relationship with Kannamma. His allegiance to the Zamindar, along with his fear of the caste system make him unwilling to stop the marriage. Bharathi's sister, however, also falls in love with a rich young man from a neighbouring town, and their differing circumstances do not hinder them from forming a relationship. In the end, Kannamma commits suicide and Bharathi jumps into her funeral pyre kills himself (in reference to the past Hindu practice of sati).

The film begins at a journey in train where Paari (Jiiva) looks back at everything. Cut to the beginning, one remote village in Ramanathapuram. Paari is a do-gooder helping everyone in need. A magnanimous man, he gives anything and everything to others if they ask for. Promising his dad (Azhagam Perumal) to earn more, Paari sets out to Chennai. But he faces more challenges. He meets a young girl Madhi (Poonam Bajwa) and falls in love with her. Some goons also cause trouble for Paari. Meanwhile, Sivamani (J D Chakravarthy), the dreaded but sophisticated don of the city is getting ready to marry Madhu. Sekhar (Murali) and Muthuraman (Parthiban) live in two different villages. However, they have two things in common: both the families (of Murali and Parthiban) are neck-deep in poverty and they want to send their eldest family member to Dubai to earn good amount of money for their families. Both Muthuraman and Sekhar along with many dreaming to go to Dubai give money to a middleman to buy them passports and visas. Everyone goes to the Chennai airport only to find that they were duped by the middleman. Sekhar and Muthuraman prefer not to go home as their loved ones might be heart-broken to know the fact. Hence, both of them agree that while Muthuraman goes to Sekhar's house saying that he was sent by Sekhar and vice versa. Back at home, an educated Muthuraman finds that though Sekhar's family land is unfit for agriculture; it can be used for grazing of cows. Hence Muthuraman manages to secure a loan with the help of Sudalai (Vadivelu) to buy a couple of cows and help the family earn a big profit; while Sekhar finds that Valli, Muthuraman's wife (Meena), is good at cooking and he suggests her to start a business in cooking. In this way, both families succeed in their efforts. Before the climax, Valli was pregnant and admitted to a hospital in Coimbatore and Sekhar asks Muthuraman to go there. At the right time, Pazhani (Charle), one of the persons who was cheated by the middleman, finds that the cheat has come into Coimbatore too in another disguise and he informs this to Muthuraman and Sekhar when he finds them. In order to prevent any more people to be fleeced by the middleman, the duo set out to bash him. At the right time; the police arrives and he promises them that the cheated men will be given passports and visas to Dubai. However; Muthuraman and Sekhar say that they do not want to go to Dubai or any other country as they became prosperous in their motherland due to their self-confidence.

A dam in the village of Solaiyur, which is the lifeline of that village is under assessment for structural integrity by the Public Works Department. The dam inspector (Ponvannan) assesses that the dam is still strong 75 years after it was built. Later that evening, he is hacked to death by the corrupt local MP Nagabhushan (Jagapathi Babu), who wants the dam destroyed for his own benefit. The dying dam inspector throws a pen drive containing details about the proposed plan to destroy the dam into an abandoned Shiva temple near the dam and warns the village head Karunakara (K. Viswanath) that the temple has to be opened as soon as possible, after which he passes away. Karunakara and the villagers are of the opinion that the temple can only be opened by the descendant of Raja Lingeswaran (Rajinikanth), who built the dam as well as the Shiva temple. Lakshmi (Anushka Shetty), the granddaughter of Karunakara and a television journalist, goes on a search to find the Raja's descendant. She soon manages to find the descendant, whose name is Lingeswaran aka Lingaa (Rajinikanth). Lingaa is the grandson of Raja Lingeswaran, but is a petty thief with his family having now fallen on hard times. He holds a grudge against his grandfather, feeling that he had brought down his family into poverty by squandering all his wealth and hence refuses to go with Lakshmi to Solaiyur. However, Lakshmi implicates Lingaa in a robbery, as a result of which the police pursue Lingaa. Lingaa is forced to accept Lakshmi's invitation to avoid getting caught and travels with her to Solaiyur.

Krishna (Jayam Ravi) is a happy-go-lucky youth who excels in every field, but always does strange and dangerous things to obtain a certain "kick"- a thrill or excitement that he craves. One such activity is secretly double-crossing his childhood friend Dass (Sathyan) while helping him elope. Sakthi (Karthik) is a spoiled rich child, with his mother (Sachu) and grandfather (Kaka Radhakrishnan) constantly doting on him with cash and gifts. His father (Vinu Chakravarthy) is worried that he has such a good-for-nothing son. Sakthi falls head over heels in love with Indhu (Rambha). Eventually the truth is revealed Indhu is furious. Sakthi sees a girl called Latha (Indhu) committing suicide. Inspector (Madhan Bob) wrongly thinks they are a married couple and tries to marry them to each other but Sakthi escapes. Sakthi mistakenly hurts another girl (Vinodhini) whose father (S. S. Chandran) also thinks him her husband. Sakthi's cousin, Mathi, is a henpecked husband to a rich and arrogant wife (Anju) and lies to her that Vichithra is Sakthi's husband. At last, Sakthi is going to marry Indhu, but people who areknown to the three girls come and misbehave. The three girls explain the situation and make them understand what happened. Sakthi and Indhu get married.
