Synopsis
Sidney, 1959. Une jeune lycéenne, Lisa, est engagée, en attendant de rentrer à l'université, comme employée au deuxième étage du grand magasin de haute couture F.G. Goode's. Elle sympathise aussitôt avec ses autres collègues vendeuses. Parmi elles, Fay, qui se méfie des immigrants ; Patty, une épouse délaissée par son mari et Magda, une immigrée de Slovénie devenue cheffe de rayon. Leur routine ennuyeuse est bouleversée par une soirée de Nouvel An chez Magda où elle présente deux beaux Hongrois à Fay et Lisa, qui tombent amoureuses d'eux. Quant à Patty, elle retrouve la passion auprès de son époux et tombe enceinte de lui. Au contact de ces femmes, à la recherche de l'amour ou de l'homme parfait, Lisa ouvre les yeux sur un nouveau monde où elle grandira et deviendra adulte. Mais, désirant réaliser son rêve, elle le quittera pour chercher sa propre voie dans les arts pour devenir actrice, poète ou romancière voire les trois à la fois.Actors

The story focuses on the Magrath sisters—Lenny, Meg, and Babe—who reunite at the family home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The three were raised by Old Granddaddy after their mother hanged herself and the family cat and have been eccentric ever since. Lenny is a wallflower who bemoans her shriveled ovary. Egocentric Meg is a singer whose Hollywood career ended abruptly when she suffered a nervous breakdown. Unruly and impulsive Babe shocks her sisters with stories about her affair with a teenaged black boy. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the women are forced to deal with assorted relatives and previous relationships while coping with the latest incident that has disrupted their dysfunctional lives.

Morgan Leafy is a British diplomat and works in the small African state of Kinjanja, in the process of decolonisation. Three Australian Army officers of the Bushveldt Carbineers serving in South Africa during the Second Boer War (1899–1902) are being court-martialed for war crimes. Lieutenants Harry "Breaker" Morant, Peter Handcock, and George Witton are accused of the murder of one Boer POW and the subsequent massacre of six more. Lieutenants Morant and Handcock are further charged with the sniper-style slaying of a German Lutheran minister, the Rev. Daniel Heese. Their defense counsel, Major J. F.
