En Sicile, dans les années 1960, alors que le chef de la mafia part en prison, il conseille à son neveu et successeur potentiel, Vito, d'épouser une jeune fille vertueuse et issue d'une famille pauvre. Le choix de Vito se porte sur Francesca, seulement 15 ans, dont il tombe amoureux. Mais la jeune fille le rejette et refuse de se marier avec lui. Humilié par son refus, il la kidnappe et la viole. Il lui demande de devenir sa femme mais elle refuse toujours. Son comportement se heurte aux conventions traditionnelles du pays selon lesquelles une femme perd son honneur si elle n'épouse pas l'homme avec lequel elle a perdu sa virginité. Francesca dépose plainte contre lui mais ses parents et ses frères ne veulent pas la soutenir face à son bourreau. Un véritable bras de fer commence entre elle et Vito. Seule contre la mafia, elle est prête à tout pour combattre Vito.

Sicile, 1961. L'officier Bellodi, des Carabiniers doit mener une enquête sur le meurtre de Salvatore Colasberna, un chef d'entreprise de bâtiments assassiné pour avoir refusé de confier un chantier à une entreprise protégée par la mafia. Le meurtre s'est produit près de l'habitation de Rosa Nicolosi, de son mari et de leur petite fille. Le capitaine Bellodi parvient à arracher à Rosa l'aveu que son mari lui a confié avoir vu le long de la route, le jour du crime, un certain « Zecchinetta », nom qui est confirmé par un informateur de la police, « Parrinieddu ». Entre-temps, le boss (chef, capo en italien) local de la mafia, Don Mariano Arena, cherche à déguiser le meurtre de Colasberna en crime passionnel et fait remonter les pistes vers Nicolosi : il a tué le chef d'entreprise en tant qu'amant de sa femme. Le capitaine ne croit pas à cette version et cherche le corps de Nicolosi, dont il pense qu'il a été tué comme témoin gênant ; de corps, il ne trouvera que celui de « Parrinieddu », tué parce que compromis. L'enquête aboutit à l'arrestation de Don Mariano mais, grâce à ses accointances politiques, il est libéré et Bellodi est transféré.

Diamonds of the Night begins with two young men fleeing from a train taking them to a concentration camp. The film employs little dialog and the boys escape through rugged and unfamiliar terrain is interpolated with dreams, memories, hallucinations, fantasies, and flashbacks. They encounter a woman on a farm and one boy struggles with thoughts of murder and rape before silently taking a loaf of bread from the woman's kitchen and leaving. Eventually, the boys are caught by members of a local shooting party. The men prepare to execute the boys, but simply laugh as they walk away instead of executing them. The ending is ambiguous: The men either actually spared the boys, or they could be walking into the afterlife.
