Synopsis
Deux belges, Noël Godin et Jan Bucquoy, après une vie sentimentale déjantée, une carrière artistique tumultueuse, repartent à l'assaut de la société du spectacle, incarnée par le Festival de Cannes 2004. Cet univers, où l'image manipule la substance, sera le théâtre du conflit des sentiments entre les générations, au travers de rencontres hétéroclites, parfois douces-amères, mais toujours touchantes. Dans ce documentaire romancé, la quête presque effrénée d'amour et de jeunesse traduit un refus du temps qui passe, et de la fin qu'il annonce. Le film mélange, outre la référence aux vacances dans le titre du film, le burlesque de Les Vacances de monsieur Hulot et l'histoire du voyage au festival de cinéma de Cannes dans Les Vacances de Mr.Actors

Enfance : le film parle au début de la vie de famille flamande mais après il parle du petit Jan en ville de province et le Jan adolescent à l'encontre d'aventures sexuelles : il est témoin à l'école des tracasseries de son premier amour sale culotte. Sa tante Marta l'emmène voir le western Johnny Guitare (1954) avec Joan Crawford qui restera pour lui l'emblème de la femme parfaite. Johnny Guitare est une allusion à François Truffaut. Il ne sera tenté ni par le nationalisme flamand, ni par l'homosexualité: ceci est expliqué dans la scène au camping dans les champs de Dixmude avec le petit film de Laurel et Hardy Cavale en série. Là il refusera les attouchements d'un copain plus âgé, avec la tour d'Yser à l'arrière plan qui fait figure de symbole du Flamingantisme. Il fait sa première conquête amoureuse lors d'un bal de village pendant lequel Will Tura chante : Ik ben zo eenzaam zonder jou (Je me sens si seul sans toi).

The film begins with the contorted body of the woman, covered in frost. From this image, an unseen and unheard interviewer (the voice of Varda herself) puts the camera on the last men to see her and the ones who found her. The action then flashes back to the woman, Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire) walking along the roadside, hiding from the police and trying to get a ride. Along her journey she meets and takes up with other vagabonds such as herself as well as a Tunisian vineyard worker, a family of goat farmers, a professor researching trees, and a maid who envies what she perceives to be a beautiful and passionate lifestyle. Mona explains to one of her temporary companions that at one time she had an office job in Paris and did very well for herself, but she became unsettled with the way she was living – choosing instead to wander the country free from any responsibility, picking up what she could to survive as she goes. Throughout the film, Mona's condition seems to become progressively worse until she finally falls where we first saw her, frozen and entrenched in her misery in a ditch.

The story follows Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt) as he travels through Mexico to find a valuable antique gun, The Mexican, and smuggle it into the United States. Five years earlier, Welbach had caused a traffic accident in which he hit the car of local mobster Arnold Margolese (Gene Hackman), who was jailed for five years after the police searched his car following the crash, finding someone tied up in his trunk. In compensation for the jail time, Welbach has been sent on various errands by Margolese's second-in-command, Bernie Nayman (Bob Balaban). Retrieving the gun will be his final errand. In New York City, Charlie Driggs (Jeff Daniels) is a seemingly conventional banker whose wife has left him. Frustrated that her boyfriend of four years, Jeremy, still has not proposed to her, Anna Brady, from Boston, travels to Dublin, Ireland to propose to him on February 29, leap day, while he is there at an international cardiologists' conference. According to Irish tradition, a man who is proposed to on leap day must accept the proposal. During the flight, a storm diverts the plane to Cardiff in Wales. Anna hires a boat to take her to Cork, but the severity of the storm forces her to be put ashore on the Dingle Peninsula. She enlists the help of a surly Irish innkeeper, Declan O'Callaghan, to taxi her across the country to Dublin to pull off the proposal in time. Meanwhile, her clumsiness in her room at the inn accidentally causes a power failure to the local village but also opens up the plot of Declans backstory and introduces the idea of a lost love from the picture that Anna finds in the armor, causing distress from Declan and making it become more intriquing. This causes Anna to later bring up his past relationships as insult.
