Rosa Moline is the neglected wife of a small-town Wisconsin doctor. She grows bored and becomes infatuated with a visiting Chicago businessman. She extorts money from her husband's patients and uses the cash to flee to Chicago, but the businessman does not welcome her. She returns home and becomes pregnant by her husband. The businessman has a change of heart and follows her to Wisconsin. He wants her back, but not her baby, so she attempts to abort by throwing herself down a hill, gets peritonitis and dies.

As described in a film publication, the proud, Southern, and old Tucker family is now broke and places its hopes on a college youth, Dal (Karns), who has a taste for gambling, his sister Beverly (Vidor), full of hope and trust, and young Ben, a disciple of right thinking. Beverly has put her brother through college only to find out that he has become a first class scamp. To maintain the honor of her name, Beverley's fiance tries to anticipate a raid on a vicious dive in the town that is frequented by Dal. The raid takes place and Dal escapes, only to be later caught and indicted for murder. Peter Lane, un vieil homme, vit seul à bord d'une barge sur le Mississippi. Une nuit, lors d'une tempête, il donne refuge à Lize Merdin et à son jeune fils Buddy. La femme meurt, lui laissant la garde de Buddy. Pour lui faire plaisir, Peter lui taille des jouets en bois avec son couteau. Peu après, Booge, un vagabond, se joint à eux. Tout se passe bien jusqu'à ce que le juge de paix Briggles veuille placer l'enfant dans une famille adoptive. La veuve Potter vient au secours de Buddy en le prenant à sa charge. Le talent de sculpteur de Peter est reconnu lorsque M Montgomery, une riche femme de l'Est, remarque les jouets créés pour Buddy et les emporte à New York.
