Après des études en Europe, Ethel Warren revient faire des débuts à New York avec la compagnie d'opéra dont Jean Paurel, un baryton de renommée mondiale, est la vedette. Carlo Sonino, un autre membre de la troupe, tombe amoureux d'Ethel et la prévient contre les avances du célèbre chanteur. Paurel s'amourache d'Ethel, provoquant ainsi la jalousie de la prima donna, Sabotini. Quand, après le premier acte, Ethel apprend que Paurel a eu une attaque à la gorge, elle se rue dans les coulisses. Carlo, prévenu par Sabotini, la suit et lui fait une scène, ce à quoi elle répond en annonçant ses fiançailles avec Paurel. Ce dernier étant incapable de jouer le deuxième acte, Carlo prend sa place et est très applaudi. Après que Paurel apprend qu'il ne pourra jamais plus chanter, Bianca, une chanteuse à la retraite et le premier amour de Paurel, lui apprend que Carlo est leur fils et supplie Paurel de laisser Ethel pour le bonheur du jeune homme. Finalement il accepte.

Kitty Bellairs (Claudia Dell), a famous flirt of her day, comes to Bath for the season. Early on in the film she declares that "in spite of her thirty or forty affairs, I've lost not a bit of my virtue." Her path is strewn with a number of conquests, including an enamored highwayman, a lord and some others who hang on her every word. A highwayman stops her coach as she is on her way to Bath and is immediately raptured by Kitty Bellairs. He trades the loot from the passengers for a kiss from Kitty who feels she should "yield" in order to protect Lord Varney's (Walter Pidgeon) life who has gallantly come to defend her honor.

An actress, Peggy, is stranded on the island of Caparoja, which is ruled by a local dictator, Sangredo. For a living, she sings in the local tavern, where she is seen by two sailors from a tramp steamer who are visiting the port, Johnny and Happy. Johnny falls in love with Peggy and plans to marry her, rescuing her from her exile. However, Sangredo hires Peggy to perform at a party he is throwing, when the original singer, Carlotta, backs out. When Johnny finds out about the agreement, he misunderstands their relationship, and blows up at her. Peggy gets furious in turn over the fact he could believe that about her, and calls the wedding off.

After his father brings disgrace on his family, Monte joins the Spanish–American War and goes with his regiment to the Philippines.
