Maria Bethânia: Music is Perfume (Portuguese: Maria Bethânia: Música é Perfume) is a 2005 documentary by French-born, Swiss-based director Georges Gachot that focuses on Brazilian singer Maria Bethânia. The film follows the star in the recording studio, the concert stage and in a visit to her 100-year-old mother in Bahia. The film also included appearances by Brazilian music stars including Caetano Veloso (Bethânia’s brother), Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque and Nana Caymmi.

With the magazine's help, they were able to stage a sell-out show in 2005 despite the recent ousting of Saddam Hussein. Filmmakers from Vice returned to Iraq in 2006 to track down the band. Upon their return they discovered the multitude of death and destruction, including rehearsing studios destroyed by bombs.

The film documents how Ry Cooder, long-time friend of Wenders, brought together the ensemble of legendary Cuban musicians to record an album (also called Buena Vista Social Club) and to perform two times with a full line-up: in April 1998 in Amsterdam (two nights) and the 1st of July 1998 in the United States (at the Carnegie Hall, New York City). Although they are geographically close, travel between Cuba and the United States is restricted due to the political tension between the two countries, so many of the artists were travelling there for the first time. The film shows their reactions to this experience, as well as including footage of the resultant sell-out concert. It also includes interviews with each of the main performers.
