Maya Macchindra is the title of about six films produced in different languages in India.

The story is based on the life of Matsyendranath or Machindranath one of the eighty-four Mahasiddhas.

Synopsis

A guru discards his bachelor code and gets involved with a woman. Shocked by his guru’s behaviour the disciple undertakes to transform him and succeeds, and in the end the guru tells him that the whole thing was a drama enacted by him to teach the disciple about maya (illusion) and truth!

The film revolves around a king (M. K. Radha) and a talented sculptor (Sivaji Ganesan). Chitrashilpi, the sculptor, could make stones sing and dance with his artistic touch. The film is based on an age-old Buddhist folktale connected with Mauryan Emperor Ashoka's son Kunal. The Mauryan prince Kunal was courted by Ashoka's younger queen Tishyarakshita and when he rejected her advances, was falsely accused by the queen of trying to seduce her and was thrown into prison and blinded. The story, however, comes to a happy end with his eyesight being restored by Lord Buddha and the king acquits of all the charges.

Sundharam Mudhaliyar M. G. Chakrapani is a wealthy man living with his daughter Kaveri (Rajasulochana) and Sahadevan lives with his wife Thanabakkiam (P. Kannamba) and daughter Sundhari (Jamuna). During a dance competition at the school function, Sundhari wins the first prize and Sundharam could not accept this as Sahadevan's family belongs to an inferior caste and indebted money from him. Sundharam magnifies this simple misunderstandings which results the death of Sahadevan. In order to cover this up, Sundharam disposes the body into the river and cooks up a story that Sahadevan had run away to avoid paying his debts. Sahadevan survives but suffers from amnesia. Sundharam grabs over Sahadevan's house and land as a compensation for his debts and Thanabakkiam and Sundhari had to leave to a smaller house in another village. There Thanabakkiam saves the life of Kanagasundharam or Kanagu (M. G. Ramachandran) from drowning in the river and thanked by Kanagu's father Loganayagam (D. Balasubramaniam) of the assistance rendered despite the difference in their caste. Kanagu and Sundhari becomes close friends and grow up to be lovers.

The story is set in a kingdom. The chief minister wants his daughter to marry the King's only son, the future prince. The King refused the idea, and the angry minister captures and arrests the King and runs the Kingdom. A loyal countryman Veeranna (Nagabhushanam) takes the Prince and leaves him in the forest away from the evil minister's hands, but gets captured himself. The Prince, grows up as the forest chief's adopted son Kannayya (N.T. Rama Rao). Veeranna's daughter is Nana (Anjali Devi). Both of them grows up as thieves. The old King escapes finally and stays at Nana's house. Nana steals the Princess Lalita Devi's (Devika) necklace and Kannayya returns it to her. The princess falls in love with him. Nana also falls for the Kannayya too. He gets to know his true identity, defeats his enemies and gets back his Kingdom.
