Ben Wrightman, a 7-year-old boy, is going to a Red Sox game with his Uncle Carl. His uncle, who had not children of his own, treated Ben like a son. A narration explains that on that day, Ben became a die-hard Red Sox fan. Just about everything he owns bears the Red Sox name, emblem, or image of a Red Sox player (with the exception of his toilet paper, which bears the New York Yankees insignia). Ben inherited his uncle's season tickets when Carl died. The story picks up 23 years later with Ben (Jimmy Fallon) as a school teacher who is immature for his age. He meets Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore), a professionally successful workaholic executive. When Ben first asks her out, Lindsey rejects him, but she later changes her mind and agrees to go out with him.

A voice over says, "No, that's not right." The scenario is repeated with adjustments until the voice is eventually satisfied. The screen fades to Cathy Palmer (JoBeth Williams) sitting at a typewriter, finishing up the story. She seals it in an envelope and sends it off. Later, her husband, Kevin (James Staley), comes home and she tells him about entering a contest to write a short story following the "Rebecca Ryan" series of novels. Kevin is patronizing, telling her, "The important thing, kid, is that you're doing something you like to do".

Felix est un écrivain raté qui habite un modeste hôtel meublé. Doris, sa voisine, travaille dans le milieu du sexe, elle a tourné dans un film X, fait la gogo danseuse, et se prostitue. Felix qui ignore ses activités l'aperçoit dans une tenue équivoque par sa fenêtre, prend ses jumelles, et se rend compte que de l'argent est échangé. Il la dénonce auprès du logeur qui la flanque de suite à la porte. Doris ne s'en laisse pas compter et parvient à pénétrer et à s'incruster chez Felix en exigeant qu'il l'héberge pour la nuit. Le ton finira par monter et une violente dispute attirera tout le voisinage. Le logeur intervient et met Felix à la porte. Felix et Doris réussissent à se faire héberger chez un ami. S'ensuivra un jeu de chat et de la souris entre eux deux, leurs univers très différents ne cesseront de s'opposer parfois très violemment, mais ils finiront par se rapprocher l'un de l'autre. À la fin, ils décident de faire comme s'ils venaient seulement de se rencontrer et partent ensemble.

Dan (Christopher Masterson) has a problem; he's been married to the beautiful Marcie (Bijou Phillips) for three months, but they still haven't consummated their union. When Dan's sex-crazed boss Catherine (Lauren German) comes on to him during a marathon work session, he crumbles under temptation. Mollie is an accountant living in New York City who has an affair with Albert, a womanizing executive who is married with two children, and becomes pregnant. During her pregnancy, Mollie and Albert keep their indiscretion secret, under the idea she was artificially inseminated, and that Albert plans to leave his wife Beth and their two children to be with her. Mollie and her friend Rona happen to catch Albert fooling around with his interior decorator Melissa and he admits he is planning on living with her after his divorce is finalized. Mollie leaves upset, and immediately goes into labor. She gets into a cab where the driver, James Ubriacco, recklessly speeds through downtown traffic in order to get her to the hospital on time, and he is inadvertently a witness to her son Mikey's birth. Mikey then begins to make commentary on his life and interacts with things through an inner voice which can also communicate with other babies.

A promiscuous and rather misogynistic man, Steve (Perry King) is murdered by one of his three ex-lovers, and after death, the powers that be cannot decide whether to send him to heaven or to hell—his life is full of good deeds, but he's "been a shit" to women, and that behavior is keeping him from going to heaven. The powers that be decide to give him a test; he is reincarnated and given a limited amount of time to have at least one woman be in love with him. To make the test more difficult, he is reincarnated as a beautiful woman (Ellen Barkin) named Amanda. After the change, Amanda/Steve encounters other people, including Steve's friend Walter, who Amanda convinces of the truth of her identity, and lesbian perfume magnate Sheila. Both become attracted to Amanda, but Amanda rebuffs Sheila's advances, even knowing that she is giving up an opportunity for a woman to love her, because Steve is homophobic and could not abide having gay sex, even though he had sex exclusively with women, as Steve, in the past. Later, Amanda and Walter get drunk together and end up having sex. In the morning, Amanda claims no memory of the sex and accuses Walter of raping her. Walter acts surprised and insists that Amanda was an enthusiastic participant. Amanda rejects Walter, but she learns shortly thereafter that she has become pregnant from the encounter. At the childbirth, the baby girl gazes upon her mother with love, and then Amanda dies, having earned her place in heaven.
