Peter Werner, fonctionnaire, vit séparé de sa femme Grit, photographe de mode. Les filles jumelles communes vivent également séparément : Gaby vit avec son père à Munich, tandis qu'Ulli vit avec sa mère à Londres. Un jour, Grit ira à Munich pour faire des affaires et veut amener Ulli. Peter prétend que tous les hôtels sont complets, donc Ulli et Grit couchent chez lui. Cependant, depuis que Peter a vu un chat noir, croisé trois religieuses et cassé un miroir, il est maintenant suivi par la malchance. Beaucoup de choses vont de travers et quand Grit doit travailler au milieu d'un dîner romantique, Peter se saoule sans retenue. Avec son locataire aussi ivre Wondrak, il écrit à son patron une lettre pleine d'insultes. Peter se réveille le lendemain matin avec la gueule de bois et demande à ses deux filles à côté de lui de poster la lettre. Quand il est à nouveau sobre, il tente en vain de récupérer la lettre. Entre autres choses, il pénètre dans la Poste et dérange trois véritables cambrioleurs. Les trois hommes simples d'esprit font tomber le butin puis s'enfuient avec des sacs remplis de courrier. Peu de temps après, ils sont à la porte de Peter et lui demandent « leur » argent.

Quand les comédiens Heinz Doll, Toni Mack et Hans Stiegler n'ont plus d'engagement, ils répondent à l'annonce du grand hôtel "Zum blauen Enzian" à la recherche d'un serveur, d'un portier et d'un liftier. Heinz, Toni et Hans sont de bons employés, satisfaisant leur chef Theres Stolzinger. Il en va de même coté cœur : Vroni, une femme de chambre, jette des regards amoureux sur Hans et la cuisinière Walpurga propose toujours quelque chose à manger à Toni qui ne peut pas refuser.Heinz n'a pas perdu son charme auprès de sa chef. Mais il a un concurrent, le Dr. Elz. Aussi, quand Anne Marie, la jolie belle-fille de Mme Stolzinger, vient travailler après avoir fait l'école hôtelière, tous les sentiments sont bouleversés et une fin heureuse s'éloigne. Une excursion de Heinz et Annemarie sur le Grossglockner va rendre clairs les sentiments qu'ils éprouvent l'un pour l'autre.

In post-World War II Germany, French Army Captain Henri Rochard (Cary Grant) is given the task of recruiting a highly skilled lens maker, Schindler (Martin Miller). During World War I, two American Doughboys, Tommy Turner and Gilbert Simpson, are more interested in picking up girls than in military duty. In Paris, they go AWOL in order to follow their libertine pursuits. They alternate between impersonating officers in order to impress the ladies, and avoiding being found out by the military police. Several brigadier generals (American, British, and French) are unexpectedly taken prisoner by the Italians while arguing military tactics in a sauna - which is a public relations disaster.
