Synopsis
Kay Stanton (Jean Seberg) lives on the French Riviera with her psychiatrist husband Neil Stanton (Arthur Hill) and son Tommy (Peter Robbins). One day while Neil is away, Kay meets an American naval ensign, Mark (Sean Garrison), and they begin an affair. Kay realises she does love her husband and tries to break off the relationship. She and Mark argue, and Kay accidentally shoots him. With the help of her friend Daphne (Honor Blackman), she dumps his body into a ravine, then calls the police anonymously to tell them of its location.Actors

On her piano, eight year old Rhoda Penmark (Patty McCormack) plays the French song "Au clair de la lune", while her father (William Hopper) says his goodbyes to her and his wife, Christine (Nancy Kelly), as he goes away on military duty. Their neighbor and landlord, Monica Breedlove (Evelyn Varden), comes in with a present for Rhoda - a locket. Rhoda, looking pristine and proper in her perfect pinafore dress and long blonde pigtails, thanks Monica for the gift. She then tap dances on the hard floor. Monica notices Rhoda's tap shoes, and Rhoda says that adding the taps to the shoes was her own idea. They then discuss a penmanship medal competition that Rhoda lost to her schoolmate, Claude Daigle; Monica speaks of it as a childish disappointment, but Rhoda's face darkens with fury. Christine and Rhoda leave for the school picnic at a nearby lake.

Sergeant James Allen (Paul Muni) returns to civilian life after World War I but his war experience makes him restless. A southern town is rocked by scandal when teenager Mary Clay is murdered on Confederate Memorial Day. A district attorney with political ambitions, Andrew Griffin, sees the crime as way to the Senate if he can find the right scapegoat to be tried for the crime. He seeks out Robert Hale, Mary's teacher at the business school where she was killed. Even though all evidence against Hale is circumstantial, Hale happens to be from New York (Leo Frank was a Southerner from Texas, but he was Jewish and had been raised in New York), and Griffin works with reporter William Brock to create a media frenzy of prejudice and hatred against the teacher. The issue moves from innocence or guilt to the continuing bigotry and suspicion between South and North, especially given the significance of the day of the murder.
