Synopsis

Seiji fait tout ce qu'il peut pour que son frère cadet Michio, qui souffre d'une maladie mortelle, puisse avoir toute l'attention médicale dont il a besoin. Ne voyant aucune alternative, il rejoint le clan des Yakuza. Un jour, il rencontre la charmante Keiko qui est la bonté personnifiée. Profondément influencé par cette rencontre, Seiji tente de tourner le dos à ses « amis » de l'ombre. Mais ceux-ci n'apprécient pas du tout cette action...

Obligé de remplacer son collègue malade au pied levé, un jeune Japonais est envoyé par son entreprise en Chine, afin de mettre au jour un filon de pierres précieuses. Le voyage ne s'annonçait pas des plus agréables et la réalité va, de loin, dépasser tout ce que Wada avait pu imaginer. En effet, dès son arrivée en Chine, il va réaliser qu'on ne lui a pas tout dit : sa société doit de l'argent à des yakuzas... et ceux-ci ont entendu parler des pierres. Ils ont donc envoyé un des leurs, Ujiie, afin d'épurer définitivement la dette : colérique, imbu de sa personne, ce dernier ne manquera jamais une occasion pour rendre le périple du jeune salary-man encore plus désagréable qu'il ne l'était à la base. Guidés par un vieil homme qui parle aussi mal japonais qu'il le comprend, les deux hommes vont aller de surprises en surprises, passant de forêts sauvages à des montagnes millénaires, au gré de tempêtes et de crues dévastatrices.

Abby (Brittany Murphy) is an American girl who goes to Tokyo to be with her boyfriend, Ethan (Gabriel Mann). Ethan tells her that he has to go to Osaka on a business trip and may not be back for a while. Abby asks to go with him but Ethan refuses and breaks up with her. Abby goes to a ramen shop afterward, and the chef Maezumi (Toshiyuki Nishida) and his wife Reiko (Kimiko Yo) tell her that they are closed. Abby does not understand them as she does not speak Japanese. She starts to cry, so the chef conveys to her to sit down. He brings her a bowl of ramen, and she loves it. A small distance away, she hallucinates that the lucky cat, known as the Maneki Neko, or Beckoning Cat, gestures to her to come over. She offers to pay for her meal, but the chef and his wife refuse.

Set in the Muromachi period in early 16th century Japan, the young ninja Rantaro (Seishiro Kato) is born into a family of low-ranking ninjas. Yukitaka and Takamura used to belong to the Usetake clan, but Rantaro and his friends aim to save them by joining a contest that ends with a race to ring a bell on top of a mountain.

Three unidentified men hold a group of people hostage in a hospital after doing a smaller crime. Inspector Ishida and Captain Tohno handle the negotiations while one of their colleagues, Lt. Ado, tries to find the reason why the men decided to take the hospital hostage. At first, Lt. Ado tries to think of the possibilities for this crime using the clever aid of Ishida, but he only reaches the solution to the puzzle later on and by himself. Relevant information is revealed to the audience through flashbacks and through discoveries made by the police. Several connections are made as the story develops. When the negotiations are finished, most things seem to be fine until they lose track of the criminals. Then, the story unveils with a different perspective, its roots in feelings of love and vengeance.
