It tells the story of a widow who shocks her upper-class, Anglo-American family when she announces that she has fallen in love with her Jewish doctor. His family is equally unhappy with the news, and both individuals to have to fight the prejudices of their families.
The film was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Drama/Comedy Special, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special (Katharine Hepburn) and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special (Harold Gould). George Schaefer was also nominated for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Specials at the Directors Guild of America Awards.
Synopsis
Margaret Delafield, a rich elderly lady and widow of Spaulding 'Spud' Delafield (an unseen character),is rushed to hospital. She is not expected to survive, and her two sons and daughter gathering at her bedside are more concerned with their expected inheritance. Her doctor, Dr Marvin Elias, encourages her to fight. Margaret makes a full recovery and returns home to a welcome party for family and friends.Actors

Eric Stanton (Andrews), a down-on-his-luck drifter, gets pulled off a bus in the hamlet of Walton because he does not have the $2.25 extra fare to take him to San Francisco. He finds a greasy spoon called Pop's Eats, where Pop (Percy Kilbride) is worried about waitress Stella because she has not shown up for work for days. Ex-New York cop Mark Judd (Bickford) tells him not to worry. Sure enough, the sultry Stella (Darnell) soon returns. Stanton (like the others) is attracted to her, but she is unimpressed by his smooth talk and poverty.

À Washington DC, le capitaine de police Frank Matthews a arrêté le meurtrier et violeur Paul Sanderson. Lors de son procès, son avocat W. W. King plaide le vice de forme, alléguant que son client n'a pas été informé de ses droits constitutionnels et la Cour suprême relaxe Sanderson au grand dam de Frank. Parallèlement, ce dernier soupçonne sa femme Adèle d'avoir une liaison avec un homme marié. Pendant qu'il s'est absenté pour se rendre à un colloque à Baltimore, sa femme en profite pour retrouver son amant Brooks Elliot, un ex-petit ami devenu sénateur. Le couple est abattu alors qu'il se trouvait au lit. Frank est le premier suspecté et, malgré son recours à un avocat, le même avocat qui avait défendu Sanderson, il est appréhendé. Pour lui, la culpabilité de Sanderson ne fait aucun doute. Il réussit à s'échapper et va retrouver Sanderson dans sa résidence en Pennsylvanie. Lors de leur affrontement, il réussit à obtenir ses aveux et au moment où Sanderson s'apprête à le tuer, Madame Sanderson mère l'en empêche. Innocenté et de retour à Washington, Frank doute de ses lendemains dans la police.
