Natpukaaga (Tamil: நட்புக்காக English: For Friendship) is a 1998 Tamil language film directed by K. S. Ravikumar. It starred Sarath Kumar and Simran Bagga in the lead roles. It became a success upon release.

It was remade into Telugu as Sneham Kosam which starred Chiranjeevi with K. S. Ravikumar directing the version.
Later remade in Kannada as Diggajaru (2000).

Synopsis

Chinnaiya (Sarath Kumar) is a faithful servant in the house of a rich man (Vijayakumar). The rich man is angry with his elder daughter (Sitara), who yearns to mend their relationship. His second daughter, Prabhavathy (Simran Bagga), who arrives from America, falls in love with Chinnaiya but after gaining his trust, accuses him of attempting to rape her. Turns out that she did this to try to unite her sister's family with her father and send Chinnaiya out since it was Chinnaiya's father who killed her mother. So Chinnaiya is kicked out of the house. Meanwhile Muthaiya (also Sarath Kumar), Chinnaiya's father, is released from jail.

Naattamai (Sarathkumar) is a very kind-hearted, disciplined man. He sits on the ancestral throne in his village to do justice (similar to panchayat). He hears all the cases and gives solutions and punishments to the wrong-doers. His wife, Khushboo admires and respects him a lot. His brothers Pasupathi (sarathkumar) and Raja Ravindra fear for him and also have a lot of respect for him as he has brought them up as his children. The young Sarathkumar marries Meena, daughter of an industrialist. She at first never liked Naatamai and her husband for being so timid before his brother but later transforms after knowing his greatness from her father.Raja Ravindra loves his paternal cousin(Ponnambalam)'s daughter (Sanghavi). In the flashback, Periya Naatamai(Vijayakumar) father of naatamai orders Ponnambalam to marry his servant's daughter whom he raped, though he is his sister's son. His brother-in-law shoots at him as he is disappointed by his verdict.Enraged Periya Naatamai gives his final verdict before dying to abandon their family and whoever visits his house will receive the same punishment and also not to share even a glass of water with them. Ponnambalam from then builds envy on his uncle's family and waits for an opportunity to take revenge on them. He plans to bring a lady (Subhashri) as a teacher to the school in the village and tells her to make young Sarathkumar fall for her. She does so to save her father who is in the hands of Ponnambalam. He kills her and makes the villagers believe that Sarathkumar has done this. Naatamai sentences 10 years of exile for his brother's family. Now Ponnambalam comes to know of his daughter's love and tries to kill Raja Ravindra with the help of his goons. Sarathkumar goes in rescue of him and pregnant Meena goes to Naatamai to convey this message. Manorama rushes to Nattamai and reveals the truth and tells that he punished his brother without committing any mistake. Naatamai takes revenge on Ponnambalam and dies on knowing that he gave a wrong verdict. Now younger Sarathkumar is shown taking the ancestral throne from his brother.

Shivashankar (Ajith Kumar), a wheelchair user, has a son, Vishnu (also Ajith Kumar) who is playful and irresponsible. To teach him a lesson, he sends Vishnu to Thottapuram to help the poor. Vishnu doesn't want to go, but a local pizza restaurateur convinces Vishnu and his friends that the village is one big brothel. In reality, Thottapuram is a sacred village and the restaurateur had purposefully deceived Vishnu and his friends. Also visiting the village are Divya (Asin Thottumkal) and her classmates. They come for their social activity course to improve the village's health and hygiene. A large building is reserved for him and the girls are asked to stay in the poor families' houses. Vishnu and his friends arrive and start to woo the girls, whom they mistake for Thottapuram's prostitutes. When Divya discovers their plan, she and her friends decide to teach Vishnu and his friends a lesson.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.
