Never the Twain Shall Meet is a 1931 talking film produced and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It is based on the book by Peter B. Kyne. The film was directed by W. S. Van Dyke and was filmed in Tahiti like Van Dyke's two previous south sea adventures The Pagan and White Shadows in the South Seas. The film is a remake of a 1925 silent film of the same name.

Synopsis

Dan Pritchard travaille avec son père à San Francisco. Il est fiancé à Maisie, qui ne semble pas très pressée de se marier avec lui. Le capitaine Larrieu, un ami de son père, revient de Polynésie où il a contracté la lèpre. Il confie sa fille Tamea à Dan, avant de se suicider. La jeune femme ne s'habitue pas à la vie américaine. Elle tombe amoureuse de Dan et le convainc de l'accompagner dans son île natale. Dan y devient jaloux de Tolongo, un prétendant de Tamea, et commence à boire avec d'autres occidentaux. Maisie arrive dans l'île et Dan revient à la raison. Ils partent ensemble, laissant Tamea au bras de Tolongo.

In this adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's "The Farewell Murder", Nick (William Powell) and Nora (Myrna Loy) Charles are back in New York with Asta and a new arrival - Nicky Jr. They are invited by Colonel Burr MacFay (C. Aubrey Smith) to spend the weekend at his house on Long Island. McFay, the former business partner of Nora's father, and the administrator of her fortune, desperately wants Nick to put his well-known detective skills to work, as he has been receiving threats from Phil Church (Sheldon Leonard), a very shady character. When MacFay is killed, Church seems to be the obvious suspect. However, Nick is skeptical. He suspects there is something far more complicated going on.
