Synopsis
Isabelle (travaillant à l'INSEE avec un salaire fixe et confortable) et Maxime (tentant de percer en tant que scénariste et dessinateur dans le monde de la BD) vivent ensemble une parfaite histoire d'amour jusqu'à ce qu'Isabelle annonce à Maxime sa volonté d'avoir un enfant. Maxime, n'étant pas capable d'assumer financièrement la future famille, refuse. S'ensuit alors pour le couple une série de chassés-croisés amoureux ; ruptures et réconciliations seront le lot quotidien, entre tentative de prise d'amant ou de maîtresse et présentation aux parents d'Isabelle, dont la vie rangée voire morne (bien qu'aisée) n'est pas un modèle pour les deux amoureux.Actors

Set in the 1970s in the rural South, the film follows the lives of protagonist Francis Doyle (Emile Hirsch), and three of his friends, Tim Sullivan (Kieran Culkin), Wade Scalisi (Jake Richardson), and Joey Anderson (Tyler Long). The four boys all attend a private Catholic school named St. Agatha's, which they detest. Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) is a faded Hollywood actor best known for playing the superhero Birdman decades ago in a series of films. He is often tormented by the mocking, critical inner voice of Birdman, and frequently visualizes himself performing feats of levitation and telekinesis. The film opens with a quotation from Raymond Carver stating that the main fulfillment in life is related to having once been loved, then cuts to a dramatic atmospheric disturbance resembling a meteor descending in flames. The film then cuts to a surreal shot depicting Riggan as levitating in his stage room. En France en 1944, la guerre touche à sa fin et un petit village de Haute-Provence attend les libérateurs américains. Au lieu de répéter avec le reste de la fanfare, deux frères, Antoine et Julien, élevés par leur oncle depuis que leur mère se prostitue, et leur copain Gaby préfèrent guetter l'arrivée des Américains, qu'ils annoncent bientôt après avoir aperçu une colonne de blindés. Malheureusement il ne s'agit pas d’Américains mais de troupes allemandes qui battent en retraite. Le maire est abattu parce qu'il avait couru vers les chars d'assaut avec un drapeau américain. Le village fait de violents reproches aux enfants qui, tous les trois, quittent en secret leurs maisons. Les frères veulent se réfugier chez leur mère à Lyon. Sur le chemin, Gaby est surpris en train de voler des œufs et ramené à la maison. Alors que les frères poursuivent leur voyage, un chien les rejoint, un berger allemand. Plus tard, les frères rencontrent Franz, un soldat allemand qui commence par les menacer avec son fusil. L'un des eux est chargé de lui apporter de la nourriture et du vin pendant qu'il tiendra l'autre en otage. Comme Franz a un lumbago et qu'il n'y a pas de médecin à proximité, les frères l'emmènent chez une rebouteuse. Le lendemain, Franz peut marcher à nouveau sans avoir mal, et les trois deviennent ses amis. Les quatre voyageurs arrivent à un village abandonné et se servent dans un restaurant. Tandis que les enfants dorment Franz va dans les maisons abandonnées pour y voler de l'argent. Le lendemain, il se rend à l'église avec le chien et découvre avec horreur que les nazis ont forcé tous les habitants à y entrer et les ont impitoyablement assassinés. Horrifié, Franz demande à Dieu en criant pourquoi il n'a rien fait pour l’empêcher et a honte d’avoir volé des morts. Au moment où il veut leur rendre cet argent les soldats américains atteignent le village et découvrent Franz et les morts dans l'église. Ils en font sortir Franz et le chien puis celui-ci est abattu pour avoir mordu un soldat au genou quand Franz lui avait saisi le bras. Par la fenêtre les deux frères aperçoivent Franz fusillé par les soldats. Tandis qu’ils pleurent Franz et le chien, ils sont ramenés chez eux par les soldats.

American Splendor retrace la véritable histoire du scénariste de comics Harvey Pekar. Au début du film, celui-ci mène une existence plutôt morose entre son travail de documentaliste, quelques conversations sur tout et rien avec ses collègues et quelques connaissances, et sa passion pour le jazz, qu'il assouvit en recherchant des pièces rares dans les garage sales (équivalent américain des vide-greniers) ou les magasins d'occasion. C'est ainsi qu'il fait la connaissance du célèbre dessinateur de bande dessinée Robert Crumb, alors inconnu, qui est lui aussi collectionneur. Plusieurs années plus tard, alors que Crumb est devenu célèbre, Harvey lui soumet les story-boards d'un projet de bande dessinée basée sur sa vie, lui proposant d'en assurer le dessin. Crumb accepte, et contre toute attente, cette série intitulée American Splendor relatant une vie simple, banale, obtient un grand succès. Harvey Pekar acquiert ainsi une certaine célébrité aux États-Unis, dont les conséquences sur sa vie quotidienne sont présentées dans le film. En particulier, American Splendor lui permet de rencontrer sa future femme Joyce Brabner, qui écrit elle aussi des comics, et avec qui il va réaliser d'autres histoires autobiographiques, également intégrées en partie dans le film (notamment Our Cancer Year).
