Synopsis
An woman named Renu (Mala Sinha) is forced to lead a life of crime as her dad is being held hostage by the underworld. She eventually joins with a suspected criminal Jeevan (Biswajeet), both fall in love with each other, and team up against the bad guys.Actors

Inspector Shankar (Biswajeet) is assigned to investigate the mysterious death of Sunder Singh (Sujit Kumar), whose ship wrecks on a stormy night. Sunder was off to marry Sheila (Mala Sinha), the daughter of his mother's (Nirupa Roy) childhood friend who had long died. Sheila was raised by her father, who dies of a heart attack when he comes to know of Sunder's death. Sunder's mother decides to take Sheila to live with her. In denial of her son's death, Sunder's mother keeps doing various acts in madness. She keeps serving food for Sunder, talks with his photos, and keeps feeling that her son has returned. Meanwhile Shankar and Sheila fall in love. But in her madness Sunder's mother starts preparations of Sunder's wedding with Sheila. Sunder's face-burnt body is found and the mystery continues whether his death was an accident or a murder.

Vijay (Guru Dutt) is an unsuccessful poet whose works are not taken seriously by publishers or his brothers (who sell his poems as waste paper). Unable to bear their taunting that he is a good-for-nothing, he stays away from home and is often out on the streets. He encounters a good-hearted prostitute named Gulabo (Waheeda Rehman), who is enamoured with his poetry and falls in love with him. He also encounters his ex-girlfriend Meena (Mala Sinha) from college and finds out that she has married a big publisher Mr. Ghosh (Rehman) for financial security. Ghosh hires him as a servant to find out more about him and Meena. A dead beggar to whom Vijay gave his coat and whom he tries to save unsuccessfully from the path of a running train is mistaken for Vijay. Gulabo goes to Ghosh and gets his poems published. Ghosh does so feeling he can exploit the poems and make a killing. The poems are very successful. However, Vijay is alive and in the hospital after the train mishap.

Mohini (Naina Sahu) is a medical student, and lives at home with her father Kishenlal Saxena Nazir Hussain, a college Professor, and her ailing mother. Her neighbours are Bipin (Shiv Kumar) and his parents. Bipin and his friends have just returned to their town from Bombay after completing their studies. One of Bipin's friends, Ravi Mehra (Biswajeet), is the son of a wealthy businessman, Amarchand Mehra (Sapru). Ravi and Mohini meet and fall in love. Bipin also loves Mohini but has never expressed his feelings. When Ravi leaves to go abroad for further studies, he promises he will get green bangles for her, as a symbol of marriage. However, soon after he leaves, Mohini is told by their family doctor that she is pregnant. Vilified and expelled from college, her father is her only support especially since her mother dies soon after hearing the news.

The nation is struck by a series of bomb blasts spread across the country. The Commissioner of Police (Murad) is baffled as to who is behind these attacks. The Commissioner receives an anonymous call where the caller tells that he knows who the masterminds behind the blasts are and their associates. He also tells that he would like to help the Police. The informant then tells that he has stored the names and images of mastermind and their associates in a microdot. The informant here is the Mr. Gonz, owner of a store, 'Twist Musical & Photo Shop'. The main mastermind or the villain is Scorpion. He gets to know that the informant is about to give their organisation's information to the police. Scorpion then sends his men or goons to recover the microdot.

Reporter Jitendra (Dharmendra) exposes dangerous working conditions in a mine owned by one of his employer's crooked creditors. He loses his job. Asha (Mala Sinha) is in court facing a murder trial. Puran (Bharat Bhushan), a lawyer and journalist, takes the case. The story then goes into flashback, showing Asha working in the rationing office just after the war. She comes from a poor family and is the sole earning member. She also has six younger sisters to take care of. Puran comes from a rich family; his father is Seth Mulchand, a business man. However, Puran decides to work for a newspaper, as a reporter. Asha likes Puran's articles exposing corruption and black-marketing, and his articles on working women. She gets interested in meeting the writer. The two meet in her office at her place of work. While leaving, Puran manages to drop his papers, and they get jumbled up with the papers on Asha's desk. Her paycheck, which was lying on the desk, is picked up by Puran by mistake along with his own papers. She meets Puran again to get her check back.
