Niram Maaratha Pookkal is a 1979 Tamil language feature film directed by P. Bharathiraja. It stars Sudhakar, Raadhika Sarathkumar and Vijayan in the lead roles with Rati Agnihotri in a supporting role and was released on 31 August 1979.

Synopsis

All characters in the movie were named after the original names of the actors. Sudhakar (Sudhakar) is a poor young man desperately looking for work. One day he has a skirmish with Radhika (Raadhika Sarathkumar), a rich girl and lone daughter of a businessman Selladurai, in a telephone booth. Radhika finds out that Sudhakar is searching for a job from his diary that he leaves at the booth. She employs him in her father's firm as a manager and soon they mutually fall in love. Radhika's class-conscious father initially opposes but later reluctantly agrees to have them married. However things take a turn when his business friend Sivaraman, to whom he owes a lot of favours, visits him and reminds him of his old promise to get Radhika married to Sivaraman's son Vijayan. And soon after Sudhakar goes missing with five lakhs of the office cash on his way to Bombay and is presumed to have absconded. Radhika is heart-broken and her father takes her to Sivaraman's estate in Ooty to relax for a while.

Thiruppaachi and Sengulam are neighboring villages with a history of enmity between them. Maayan (Manoj) and Machakanni (Riya Sen) meet on the day of her engagement and its love at first sight. Her marriage itself gets called off when the groom and his family insult Machakanni's family and her romance with Maayan continues. But when her brother finds out about him, all hell breaks loose. The turned-down bridegroom is still itching for revenge and figuring out that the only way to extract it is to marry Machakanni, he pleads for forgiveness and succeeds in melting her brother's heart. The marriage is finalised but Maayan's friends swear to unite the star-crossed lovers. There is also a subplot of Maayan's aunt(Radhika) trying to get her daughter married off to Maayan.

Shanmugakani (K. Bhagyaraj) arrives in the village of Thaayamangalam as the new school teacher and soon falls in love with a local damsel Jothi (Rati Agnihotri). The village head called as "Periyavar" (played by G.Srinivasan) is a lecherous and sinister man who has a lustful eye on Jothi. Amavasai(Goundamani) is Periyavar's stooge who also has a long-standing desire to marry Jothi. Periyavar frames Shanmugakani for the rape and murder of a woman social activist and gets him evicted from the village and gets Jothi married by deceit to Amavasai. He asks Amavasai and Jothi to stay with him in order to satiate his lust with Jothi. What happens afterwards forms the rest of the story.

This story revolves around an unemployed youngster who tries to become rich for his big family. Bhagyaraj is an unemployed gold medalist with 5 younger sisters, and a mother. He is unable to find a job in spite of his education, and is supported by his sisters, and his landlord played by Sivaji Ganesan. After many failures, he goes to Chennai in search of job, and meets Radhika. The rest of the movie is about how he succeeds in life and what he ends up with. The best part of the screenplay is its ability to portray many of the existing social conditions in the society including unemployment of educated youth and dowry.
